I self published my first novel. It's a techno thriller, available on Amazon for Kindle or in paperback. My proof copy of the paperback will be here Friday. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

I woke up from a dream one morning about this girl in a tank. I started writing just to figure out who she was. The plan was for a short story, but it went to almost 60,000 words.

Anyway, it's my first, and Im proud of it.

Is this like skinny dipping in a stock tank out on the range? Or some military rolling bang stick?

Danial, Thanks. I'm Glad you enjoyed it. Positive feed back from a successful and published writer is especially gratifying.

It would have benefited from better editing. I'm right at 50K words into the sequel. I've got an editor lined up for it, so hopefully will produce a more polished product.

I immediately thought "Petticoat Junction" when I heard the concept.

Looking forward to it.

Noticed a few typos...but yanno...they are insidious things and after seventy-eleven editing passes you'll still have 'em...

Something I've found *extremely* helpful on editing though...

Print it out, lock yourself in a room, and read it out loud...have a highlighter...anything you stumble over, or have to back up and re-read, question where the character is or how they got to that point, etc...just hit with a highlighter and keep going. Don't stop...stay in the rhythm at least through a chapter.

Once done, go back...pretty much anyplace you highlighted has a technical or story issue within a paragraph or so of that point.

The "out-loud" part is key...when you read your own work silently, your mind substitutes what it *knows* is supposed to be there.

Do this a few times and your editor will have much less work.

Also...do listen to the editor...but don't blindly follow their instructions...often they will alter things in a way that effects the meaning or direction of the story...

My old task master perfectionist boss in the JAG made me proof read my staff work bottom to top (in reverse one word at a time) so no typos/misspellings would be missed.  Reading nonsense (backwards) makes it much easier to find them, than reading for comprehension forward, where your mind knows what you mean and just runs past the typos.  It was tedious and boring for 3-10 pages.  Probably impossible for a whole book.

This was by way of punishment for maybe submitting work with a single typo once every 2-3 months (always for either the 2 or 3-star).  And each piece of staff work was read by four different people, but all blame went to the author.

I can hear him now....... To err is human, to forgive is not SAC policy.   Angry

Jess, Danial, Thanks for the advice. I know that in the old days of actual pasteup in the paper, the copy editors would read aloud for exactly the reason you mentioned.
I haven't tried the backwards thing yet, but I will.
You are both correct in that you will read what you know you meant rather than what you wrote, no matter how many times you go through it.

I'm still about 10K words from finishing the sequel to "The Time I'm Given," but here is a free short story to hold you over. It's available on Kindle for 99¢. I'd have made it free, but I don't think I can.

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Don't buy "Doubt" on Kindle. I know It's only 99¢, but I know there is a way to make it free for 5 days. I'll let you know when I figure it out and it's free on Kindle. In the mean time, it is free as a PDF download on my site.

I emailed the pdf to my kindle.  cooldude Although if it was available on Kindle Unlimited, I could have read it for free anyway; since I have an Unlimited subscription.
