Subject: THE DOT

YOU MAY HAVE WONDERED ABOUT IT AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER . . .
<ATT0000111.jpg>

SOMEONE HAS FINALLY CLEARED THIS UP. HERE IT IS: For centuries, Hindu women have worn a dot on their foreheads. Most of us have naively thought this was connected with tradition or religion, but the Indian embassy in DC has recently revealed the true story. When a Hindu woman gets married, she brings a dowry into the union. On her wedding night, the husband scratches off the dot to see whether he has won a convenience store, a gas station, a doughnut shop, a taxi cab, or a motel in Ohio. If nothing is there, he must remain in India to answer telephones and provide us with technical assistance...

And here I thought it was a 'Push Start'.

And so a Turban would be a 'Pull Start'.

I just LOVE how people look for a reason to be "OFFENDED".

The first time that I heard this joke it was told to me by a friend that was born and raised in India, I suppose he's also a racist bigot.  uglystupid2

I never said I was offended or that I thought it was racist. Just didn't think it was funny. No big deal. Jokes are like that. What's funny to one person may seem stupid to another.  coolsmiley

I just LOVE how people hear what they want to hear, see what they want to see, read what they want to read. I'm curious why you apparently took Britman's statement and my thumbs up to it as calling it offensive or racist ?  ???

I'm part Polish.  When we used to go visit the family in Chicago... Holy cow, I never laughed so hard at so many Polock jokes.

Over the years we have been programed to be more "sensitive". Some (very small portion) is good the rest is just political correctness crap

Overall it was better when we didn't care how anyone else felt, and it wasn't cool to " be offended". You just got over it

I agree, there's far too many people, organizations out there just looking to be "offended". Ethnic jokes have been around a lot longer than we have... and we've all been the butt of one at least once in our lives I'm sure. As I see this thread, there doesn't seem to be anyone saying they were offended though... just that it was a poor joke in itself (which I agree... certainly not up to Patrick's usual standard).
I can't agree however with your statement that "it was better when we didn't care how anyone else felt"... what is so wrong about caring about others' feelings? Friends or strangers I just meet, I am always considerate of their feelings. I don't think that makes me "PC" - just a nice guy cooldude

Lol...I meant how anyone feels about jokes.  I'm not saying we should intentionally try to hurt someone's feelings, but if they can't take a joke they need more training

There's quite a lot of self justifying rationalizing bullshit in this thread.  Lately a lot of we Americans have responded to any indication of near offense by attacking folks who "look for an opportunity to be offended" while maintaining a self presentation of the innocent sounding, "I did nothing wrong."  Wrong is wrong whether it offends or not.  Racism is racism whether we are called on it or everyone seems to laugh along with us.

I really don't like dealing with Indians, real Indians not my relatives.  I don't like what seems to be happening in the hospitality industry in this country.  That said, the majority, the overwhelmingly vast majority, of the many, many millions of Indians live out their lives without answering our help desk calls or immigrating to our country.  A stupid joke is a stupid joke.

I think that today's America would be a different and better place if the Americans of the earlier centuries had not imported slaves from Africa.  That doesn't make it okay for me to tell jokes implying that people of African descent are inferior or intellectually second rate.  Jokes pretending that those of another race or culture are somehow inferior, less important, or intrinsically stupid aren't funny.  They simply identify us for what we are and incidentally for what we should not be.

I will confess that Jeff's revelation does cause me to rethink some of my values.  As I'm rethinking I think of someone who recently posted that conservatives past forty can't learn.  I'm way past forty and I'm so conservative that I think the most of the vocal (can you be vocal while typing?) conservative members of our board are far too liberal.  Some people are just full of crap.  Let me amend that to probably most people.

Jokes more often than not tend to be statements of our values that we have couched in intended humor.  I really don't have to look for opportunities to be offended.  I'm offended on a regular basis and often by self aggrandizing stupidity.

By the way, I can't spell very well and I often have to use a dictionary.  I'm thankful for the internet and for spell checkers.

"Blessed is he who does not take offense at Me."  That wasn't actually referring to myself but it applies, don't you think?   Smiley

You're a good man, Patrick.  I believe I'd like to go for a ride with you.  No, not on the Valks, but on what's sitting behind your Valk.   cooldude
