my friends "97" valk used about a quart of oil during our trip out west. this was in about 3500 miles. i did not see any smoking from the exhaust or leaks. anybody got any ideas or had the same issue. he has about 80 k on it and it runs great.

If that's factual somethings up!
These engines just don't go through oil like that. Must be a gasket or ring issue, but no smoke?

   Please don,t take this wrong.
Did you or he look at dip stick.
Reason I ask is was the bike held
stright up to take a look at level.

I would change the oil and filter...put four quarts in, run it. Stop it. Check the dipstick with the bike upright and make sure it hits where you expect (I've seen dipsticks smashed into the handle or falling out that read wrong).

Then go for a long ride...see if it does it again. Perhaps the level or the dipstick just wasn't right in the first place.

That's a lot of oil in 3000 miles...it should be all over the bike and dripping off when stopped, or smoking like a freight train.

I agree with the dipstick issue.....  mine had too much when I first got it.  The dipstick could be wrong.  I drained it, added 4qts with a new filter and MARKED my new FILLED LEVEL on the dipstick.  I park in a Chock and it's level (more or less) in the chock and works well when I check oil levels.

oil use update:

Ck. out my friends valk--changed oil and found it was only 12 oz low for 3500 miles. But even with that it did not touch the dip stick at all. We poured in new oil until it measured right (12 oz.) on the stick with the old oil, then run it to full temp, then drained it. Look ok for 3500 miles-no metal fines using a magnet sumereged in the old oil. Put in four qt's. oil and ck. out same place on dip stick. Plugs, valves, compression all ck. to the book-perfect! Only thing we can understand is maybe a valve seal letting some oil by at full temp. All pipes look same color and not oily? ???:-X :-X :-X
