I don't quite know what your meaning of modern is. But there is a Saive and a Baker [ both side by side 10 ga] for sale at Gun Brokers for under $1K. The more popular makes are going for some high dollars. There is an Ithaca 4 for a mere $9750.00

My question would be why would anyone want a side by side other than an old one for historic value?

12 gauge 3.5 is typically replacing the need for the 10 gauge in modern hunting.
Bur to my knowledge none are made in a double.

A decent modern 10 gauge may be very expensive if you can find one.
You define decent.

Modern 10 gauge have been typically auto or pump and were very available several years.
There should be plenty in the after market used.

12 gauge 3.5" are nice and is what I turkey hunt with. Got a 73 yard kill a couple years ago. But this was due to the custom long range shells and a custom made choke tube. You would never get past 50 yards with factory replacement chokes or factory loaded shells. My buddy has a 10 gauge semi auto. Shoots 3.5" shells and it does ok. Just because its bigger doesn't mean its better. Why take the abuse of the 10 gauge recoil when you can get better performance out of a 12.the longest kill he has is 32 yards. I tell my buddy he has little man syndrome,  he is little so he has to make up for it with what he drives and what guns he has.  2funny

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Im not a fan of pump shotguns. I hv 2 single shots and would love a double barrel.

Stoeger side by side 12 gauge coach shotgun. Reasonably priced and decent quality.

Funny this was brought up at this time. I was just contemplating hacking down a nice old double 12g I've had for years. Not much value for hunting or resale value as is, (about $200). If it were cut down nicely and sold for defense weapon, I think it could easily double that, although I will be keeping it for now.
While I was searching for legal overall length (I know barrel has to be 18") and(now I know 26" overall) legality in the state of TN without permit or tax, I discovered something I did not expect.
Seems our state gubbermint quietly passed a law and is in effect (as of July 2014)  allowing anyone that is legal to own a firearm, may carry it in ones privately owned vehicle, fully loaded. Handgun, rifle, or shotgun. No permit required. I do have a handgun carry permit.

Found out some other related stuff too, I'll go into later.
Well, I will be performing the surgery soon.

Just a friendly note.... the reason all the Mfgrs make their shortest shotgun bbls 18.5" is to avoid the possibility of some G asswipe claiming an 18" bbl is really 17.99999999 (and a felony).

Exactly. Was on jury once for this.

UNLESS you pay the $200 tax and fill the paper work out BEFORE you cut the barrel. Then you can cut it as short as you want it.

Certainly, though I didn't think you had that in mind for the old double you were describing.

No, I'm not going the registration route on this, I will keep this one 18+/26+ so it can be re-homed at some point without fuss if I decided to.
I have shortened barrels before, but not the stock & barrel down to minimum.
I'm curious what the law is regarding carry on the m/c would be, you know, in case I hit a squirrel and had to put it down? Roll Eyes
I think the new TN carry in vehicle law is coinciding with the castle law, so not too sure if a m/c can be considered a "castle" unless you're like DDT or Dan.

I hope you're a good shot and you have sights and the time to use them on that 10 gauge. 2 shots then you throw the gun? go to 7:25 in the video if you're in a hurry. I'd rather have a Judge with more shots or my 17 round 9mm.

I have a Rossi coach gun [ similar to that in the video]. Its not really good for anything except to look at.  I keep an old worn out hammerless cutoff double under the bed. I'm not a fan of big shot, I prefer smaller stuff. And, I think its hard to miss something across a room.
I've thought about getting a Judge for quite some time, now you have me thinking about it again.

Keep the Judge in my small office cooldude

No way a 410 loaded with anything could come any way close to the devastation a 10 or 12 ga. could deliver to an assailant.

It looks like shells might be to key to a good shotgun.

some people were calling the old one "thunder dome"

someone out alone on his bike probably has the tools he needs

and I am honored to be mentioned in the same sentence as DDT
