Yeah I know, not the smartest thing, but I sometimes love riding the 5 miles to my parent's house barefoot... Some folks like the freedom they feel riding without a helmet, I prefer the freedom I feel riding barefoot...

A really LONG time ago I was able to run on gravel and hot asphalt roads. School let out in the summer and I wuz barefoot. THAT was THEN this is NOW. And specially since the ritis is in my feet also there is NO way NO how I can ride barefoot. I tried shorts and tennys and cooked some meat and was hard on the ritis infested feet to shift and brake. Hate too think of being in the twistys and leaned over and have the pavement make contact with bare skin at speed on any highway. Picature of that dudes-duds-sole hanging off his foot was very informative. RIDE SAFE.

I must be a pussy. Doesn't it hurt to shift ? I'm definitely not a macho man uber tough guy but no, not really... I don't slam through the gears while barefoot, but it's not bad. I've also been known to make the 50 mile each way ride to the Renaissance Faire wearing ghillies (But alas, I don't wear a kilt on the bike, I wear jeans and change into my kilt in the parking lot.) To many people even with all the gear all the time riding a motorcycle is akin to a death wish, it's just what level of risk you're comfortable with and brings joy to you. For some it's riding with full gear all the time, for some it's riding without a helmet, for others it's riding with your feet hanging out, and some folks hang up the bike keys entirely.

On the mainland it was all gear, all the time. Felt naked if anything was missing. Here in Hawaii, where it's in the 80's every day of the year, local rides are without helmet, wearing shorts and sandals. Not saying it's right, but that's the standard lately.

I made the mistake of searching for 'motorcycle' on the Figure one app. De-gloving (like the image you show) & and road rash were the milder images available. The human body isn't built for high speed, sudden stops against immovable objects [the 'figure 1' app is kind of an Instagram for medical professionals. free service for everyone, but only medical personal can post comments]

I most certainly agree. When i was rear ended on my last bike i was literally knocked out of my nikes. I usually wore boots then. I always wear them now.

Harleys are SOOO well balance NO shoes are required since they stand up while stopped all on their own right??? I do not wear boots since some are thicker and hard to get under the foot shifter, so tennis shoes are my way to go 99.999% of the time. I have on occassion ran my scooter though, no shifting, 1 mile downtown with sandals as long as I wear the strap on kind since the ones that can easily come off are not to my liking while on even my scooter. It still amazes me most HD riders wear FULL GEAR and HD logoed at that yet the majority around me never wear a helmet. That is what I never understood. Although, same can be said for me wearing t-shirt and stretch pants and tennis shoes with NO gear on in the summer riding months except a helmet. To some, that doesnt make sense either. for me, it is all about comfort vs. looking cool with all the latest gear. That may change though once, if ever, I get involved in an accident I wish I should have wore my fully geared up cycle jacket which I do at times spring/fall mostly.
