I guess that's one way. Kinda creepy though if you ask me.

I cut up a bright red silk tie and made tight knots on my luggage handles.

Apparently lots of people had bright red silk ties.

My parents used to do something similar, only using red yarn.  Funny thing is, they used to have beige hard sided samsonite which NO ONE wanted.  But their handles did stand out.
