Only went up to Alabama for the opening weekend plus a day.
Took one big ol fat doe for meat. Neck shot.....dropped without taking a step. Saw nothing with horns.
My buddy took an 8-point with a 14 1/4" inside spread.......he thought it was larger.
Have to give that to him as it was the last few minutes on the last day and the area he was in gets dark very quickly.
At least we found this one. He has a habit of poor shots and this one wasn't any different. Couldn't find it that evening but found it early the next morning. Shot was way low.

Lucky to draw my third moose tag for moose in Maine. Hunted solo 6 days, walked about 52 miles hunting, killed a nice young meat bull, and another 14 miles out (7 trips 1 mile 1 way).  Stalked to within 16 yards of a 13+ year old bull, huge antlers, weighed estimated 1,250 pounds easy, but would have been tough as leather.  Stalked to within 12 yards of a 6 1/2 year old bull with nice rack, 17 points and nice shovels with 3 tines each, but figured he would replace the old guy, so kept hunting.  Ended up with about 200 pounds steak, 200 pounds stew meat, and 150 pounds of hamburger, each piece trimmed.  Sent the hide after fleshing to Moyle for tanning, best in the business.  I enjoy packing them out, takes 7 loads, shoulder, ham, ham, shoulder, neck and backstraps/tenderloins and misc, hide, and then head last.  Use a Bull-Pac out of Idaho.  Have packed out 13 caribou, 6 elk, and a total of 5 moose.  Pouring down rain.  Saw as high as 30 grouse per day, and stalked to 20 yards of a small black bear.  Wonderful hunt.

I took a nice 11 point, 20" inside spread, 10" brows and 12" G2s. Dressed at 178 lbs, one of the nicest I've taken on my property. I have 378 acres to wander around on. My brother took 2 nice 8 pts here as well. I'm still hunting for my second with muzzle loader.

I'm still hunting for my second with muzzle loader.

One mentioned what type of weapon they used to get their kill, how about the rest?

It was mentioned stalking within yards, for what reason? Bow hunter, ??

In the US, you can hunt with a side arm (can't in Canada), everywhere/some places, any one use iron sites on a hand gun, or scoped?

I got my hunters number back in 81' when I was 18, but have never found someone who was a hunter to take me out for a hunt. Always wanted to know if I was able to take down some live table meat. Dad/uncles stopped butchering livestock, when I was in my teens. Always helped with the butchering too.

I'm planning on hunting our late gun season with my revolver, iron sights. Will be my first time hunting with a handgun. Have put about 500 rounds through it the last few weeks and can consistently hit a 8" pie plate at 50 yards free hand. Figured thats good enough to kill a deer. I put a couple does in the freezer already but would like another or 2.

Britman - Detn8er...You two should go to work for the insurance companies or the Michigan DNR. Thats what they are trying to do kill all the deer. They forget one thing, revenue for the state but what the hell, Michigan doesn't need money. Due to the DNRs mismanagement of the deer herd they are succeeding. Some say good while others figure the monies lost because of it and it is large.
There are (were, with license fees now that # has gone down) over 400,000 bow hunters in the state of Michigan alone. The total is about the same for gun hunters or double that total. Times that by roughly $50.00 per hunter, (some more due to outrageous license prices)  and that is what the state makes or made in a hunting season. Hunters have quit coming here for just that reason, plus loss of the states herd due to mismanagement. Hard winters and the wolf population in the U.P. are major problems and there are very few deer in the U.P. The wolf population is a major problem along but the DNR won't cut the wolf population. Tree huggers and the usual back turning by the DNR have allowed the wolf population to soar. What do wolves eat? Now Michigan hunters go to Illinois where they manage their deer herd, the hunting is excellant and they have bigger deer due to said management. Illinois now gets the money that  has left Michigan. Not only in license fees but food, gas and lodging.
I understand the issue with bikes and deer, I ride to.  But in this issue the state has cut it's own throat monetarily because they kiss the insurance companies asses. Then they bitch and cry poor mouth.  They have created their own problem with raising license fee's which has reduced hunters and failing to properly manage the herd. Hunting used to be big business but it is dwindling due to poor business and short "sightedness" on the DNRs part. The other concern is that youth hunters are gone. No one takes the time to take their kids / grand kids hunting anymore. The kids have no interest either. They would rather set inside and play video games and text each other. Hunting in general is a dying art. For my family, we ate what we shot. Had a good time together and NOT setting in the house. There is my spew.

I can see a compromise here.

Michigan should lower the fees to hunt forest rats and then, let hunters get two for the price of one.

Sorry but, I get nervous every time I see one (still alive) on the side of the road.   I've got no use for them.   I honestly hope every hunter gets his limit every year.   There are predators and prey, they are meant to be prey.

Don't be... Although I'm a "gun guy" I've never hunted, but find the discussion highly interesting and informative.

I've bagged two (one doe and one 8 point buck) with my Remington 30-06 bolt action. Will be hunting again this weekend. Processed both deer myself with a little help from my friend Tom. Purchased a LEM #8 big bite grinder for doing the hamburger and chili mix. Will be eating good this coming year. Wish I could post a picture but no longer have means to resize picture for photostash and can't seem to get picture from photo bucket to web site. I can put it on Facebook.

Those are some good stories. Things do get side tracked, but, all our subjects do so I shouldn't be surprised.

Two squirrels last week.

It wasn't too tough dragging them out.

Patrick,,,,I didn't derail the post, I was never on the tracks for very long. This is a touchy subject around here. Not unlike you we can kill up to I believe 8 as well buying doe permits. I hope everyone does well! I was brought up hunting and love it. I've taken 28 deer with a bow and this one this year is number 39 with a gun. We don't shoot does  and only shoot bucks 8pt or bigger. Just our policy on my place. It is working out well for the quality of deer we are seeing. This has taken 18 years, that is how long I have had this property.
I hate, yes HATE coyotes to. They should all be dead. When deer season ends that is what I hunt and have been very successful at it. That is fun in itself. It wasn't a bad question it was a good one and I apologize for going off the tracks...Twice now.

Hit one myself when riding in UT. No injuries.

Had at least a dozen close calls involving a variety of curse words and underwear.

I know of too many dead or injured through deer hits.
