I think it's one of the best reads in that genre. The sequeal to it is out now too One year after.Another good one to check out is Lights out by David Crawford,he first posted a chapter at time on AR15.com I was following it by installments like a cliffhanger series.

I did read it.
I thought it was an excellent read, very sobering premise; as I was up in the Blue Ridge mountains, when I read it, it was even more poignant to me.

Along the same lines, with a little fantasy twist is "Dies the Fire" by SM Stirling. Whole series of books of "the Change" But then I am a big SF reader.

An EMF attack is a scary scenario, and not a far-fetched one. I sure wish our government would take this threat seriously and dump the necessary funding into upgrading and safeguarding our grid.

I believe you may have meant EMP (not EMF) - but I did not read this book... ???

LOL! You and I have learned to distinguish between accepted and proper. If you move far enough south almost anything is accepted. Points for effort. No increase in approval.

I read it. Theres a local radio guy here and he has interviewed the author several times. He's a very good interview. "Liberty watch radio", all strung together.com. Its in the archives. Tammy promised the sequel for Christmas so I''ll be busy that day.

Have not read the book the threat is very real. Huge solar flares like what happened in the 1850's could do the same. Now two weeks ago I heard and interview - forgot where - about how foreign gov'ts have most likely already hacked into our grid through computers. This includes China, Russia and probably quite a few others. It is not in there interest to shut down our grid and we could do the same to theirs. The point is they are already in. Now say these Isis or other Islamic terror agencies or just some other whack job does this. We are far more vulnerable than most people know. Chuck

Great posts everyone
IMHO its the fact that these giant transformers are all one of a kind custom made and we just do NOT make them here at home.
In a mega solar flare event or an EMP event the power lines themselves soak up this energy blowing the transformers (most of them) out both the large ones used to step up and step down the voltages and the smaller ones on the streets
A utility doesnt budget for this. If they had to what would be the real cost of electricity then?
And will the government go rogue looking after whoever is left in charge, taking of food and putting us in camps for " our own safety"
Serious questions that I have never heard any candidate discuss. Nor has any POTUS every brought this to light. Does the govmt have a plan other than protect the ruling class. If you are not Amish or living off the grid should we not all think about how we can protect our families short and long term

I have read it Oss. (along with Lights Out) That book really wakes you up doesn't it?
I have tried to get my kids to read it, and they all look at me like I am nutz. I can't figure out if their heads are in the sand, or up their A**es)
An EMP is a real possibility, the consequences are horrific if it were to happen in real life. The book is in fact fiction, but based on numerous expert opinions of what would happen to the country if the grid was to ever go into meltdown.

An EMP attack would be the least of our problems if it ever happens. It would be the start of WW111. An EMP attack is when a nuke is set off over the country then we retaliate the the s--t hits the fan. Just an EMP would take decades to recover from but world war ,Humm. A EMP from a solar flare is a problem in that it destroys the transformers everywhere. and the electricity goes out. Most people think well replace them. With what? There are no replacements and without electricity industry can't make new ones. We are screwed.

Thanks for the tip, Oss. Got both of them for myself for Christmas, just finished with them both. I understand a third followup is coming soon.
Good reads. The farther one gets in the books, of course the more conjecture as to what might happen. But, the technical details are correct.
Understand, this is about a high atmosphere EPM strike, taking out almost EVERY electronic device.
Even it this does not happen, they say if solar flares of the same intensity as were happening in 1859? occurred, the more sensitive electronic devices would be wiped out. Would not take out the "harder" electric systems, but would still cause massive disruption in our way of life.
