Moving to Murphy NC in April looking for other Valk riders in the area. Looking for someone that knows the roads to ride with.

Since they "repealed prohibition" in Murphy the town has really grown.

There's a new casino on the north east side on Hwy 74 on the way to Andrews where.

As to roads just follow your front wheel and you will not be disappointed. Many back roads may end going to dirt. Many will take you to some of the best roads in the SE.

You will ideally situated to ride into the N GA mountains.

http://twowheelsofsuches.com/

http://thelodgeatcopperhead.com/ was targeted at riders  but has changed it's demographic target to accommodate all as can be seen by their calendar of events.

This map gives you a small sample of some of the roads

http://gauntletga.com/images/GauntletMap2012.jpg

Do take your time getting acclimated to the roads. Complete change from the FL flatlands.

That I do know, we are up off 294 and just driving it in the truck has been a challenge. I can't seem to drive fast enough yet for the locals yet.
I can't wait we have looking up that way for a few years and have taken 52 it think it is from Ellijay to Chatsworth and it a blast, can't wait to do it on the bike.

That's a nice area to be in.

Cherohala Skyway is a short ride away.

Can't wait to find it. Are there many Valk riders in the area?

You got it, Hope to be settled in by May, I'll be retired so I should be able to get a ride in anytime. It will be a first time on the Dragon for me.

Congrats on pending retirement and the move to the mountains.  First time on the Dragon should not be done on the weekend or a holiday when all the squids are there.  Do it during the week.  That is not the only good road in the area.

I have seen others in the Ellijay GA. area, good advice on the Dragon, thanks.

There are great roads for about 100 miles in every direction from Murphy.
Excellent location for a rider's retirement.

Thanks Allan,
That's kind why I picked murphy, for the riding. Looked a lot down in Ellijay GA, but could not find a spot on top of a hill 1648 feet with three acres and deer in the back yard. Can't wait to get the fat ladies up there and on the road.

I just left the area. I lived in Cleveland, TN, while on a project for work, and lived there for the last 21 months.  I should have posted like you to get some advice on riding in that area before I got there. Twenty of those months were with my Valk and I enjoyed the roads in TN, GA, and NC (all a short ride away). I ventured out on my own several times. Rode along the Ocoee River to Murphy, NC; rode the Cherohala Skyway; and the TOTD. Fortunately I have a Garmin  because when I rode by myself I wasn't exactly sure sometimes where I was, but I was always able to find my way back to the apartment.

CaptSharky, enjoy the roads in the area, my friend. I'm back home in MO, and would much rather spend the winter in TN. But, there are good roads everywhere. Maybe I'll see you at InZane next year.

Smiley hey fellow flat lander, we moved to Murphy in 1985 from palm beach county and moved back to Florida in 1996 but had a second home there until last month. While there I got my general contractors license which sent me in every direction and all the back roads. All the roads are great for motorcycle riding, doesn't matter which direction you go. Someone mentioned 294 that's a good one and off of that is candy mountain rd.  crazy2. Deals gap (tail of the dragon) is a bucket list ride but there are so many other roads that are much more enjoyable. You will not see many Valkyries there but a lot more Harley's. also the surrounding states ( Georgia and Tennessee ) offer nice day trips. The new casino is actually off of 74/129, 64 actually takes you to Haysville and on up to Franklin. It took me around 5 years to get that in my head. I lived in the Peachtree area which is where the Hospital and College. I now live 45 miles north of Tampa and ride with a great group of people. There is usually a ride every weekend and all are welcome, a lot of back roads here some remind me of The Murphy area. If you need any help finding things or people to help you up there let me know. cooldude

Just noticed where you are moving from. I lived there in 1975 and 76 work at Taurus Paint
and Body off of Peters rd.. We did a lot of work for people living in Sunrise. Moving to Murphy will be like moving to another Country compared to Ft. Lauderdale. You and I are around the same age but you are probably in much better shape than me because I could no longer climb stairs or walk that terrain. One person mention not been able to drive fast enough for the locals. You will experience that also until you get your NC license tag then they will not tail gate you. Wink

I was hoping to find a couple of Valk's in the area to ride with, I know there are a lot of HD in the area but you meet the nicest people on a Honda. I can't wait. Going up Friday to have some flooring delivered on Sat. but I'll be in the truck got to be back for Monday. I can make the 12 hour drive without too many stops in the truck. I'll be headed back up Jan 15 to have the floors installed. Then the real moving begins. The bikes probably will not make it up till April. Angry

The heavy rain forecast for the next few days should show you if there's any flooding problems in your future.

Smokin Joe and the Wild Bunch sometimes meet up at the Exxon gas station in Tellico Plains at the western end of the Cherohala Skyway.

It's a good ride from your house to there.

I am on top of a hill 1645 + = feet. Water runs down hill, my only problem is the gutters freezing, but that doesn't look like it getting cold this week.
