2 years ago on my way to TX on the bike i was just outside columbia MO on the super slab and WHAM,, something hit my hand and exploded. I looked down and had blood and guts all over my chest. Hand only hurt a little bit and pulled over. It was a quail. My buddy following me said all he saw was an explosion of feathers. Sure was a mess to clean up.

As a kid riding an old conglomeration of parts some might have called a motorcycle, I was tooling down a country road in Iowa doing about 60. Hunters know that pheasants take off quick and fly low, that's what happened that day. Big male, took off on my right out of the ditch, flew straight across in front of me. I hit it with the homemade windshield and it snapped clean off just above the handlebars. Bird tasted pretty good although my sister wouldn't eat any of it. I told her it was road kill and as usual, her imagination took over.  Evil

lol,,.John,, I grew up in Iowa riding and when I was 16 the only day I wore my face shield and helmet on my way to school on the bike something hit me in the face so hard nearly took me off the bike. Stopped and went back and it was a red headed woodpecker.

Summer before last I was riding down a 40mph road in town . Out of nowhere two birds that were fighting came right at me one pulled up and  the loser didn't. It hit me in my right hand , hard enought to numb it slightly . Stopped at the next light to wipe some bird poop off my hand.

I've had a number of near misses with Turkey vultures.  They are all over the place around here.  At 60 lbs (perhaps a small exaggeration), they don't gain altitude all that fast.  I've swerved, or just ducked below the fairing-shield and hoped for the best.  They are often sitting on road kill, and seem to be thinking about fighting you for it, as you ride up on them.  At 20 feet and in, they look remarkably like a freekin' B1 bomber (except for the ugly red face).

Sometimes, they are like an early warning system.  If you are paying attention and see one or three sitting very low in a tree, just around the bend may be a deer or possum or some other dead thing in the road (you'd like to miss).

turkeys and geese around me all over, not good news for anything in their way.  A few near misses but the only thing we hit, that was flying, doing about 45-50 mph at the time was a big crow/black bird with the car windshield and luckily just a blood splat with the bird whirling on over the car dead when it finally hit the ground.  I found it amusing at the time.

At the VOAi ride in Ohio a few years ago I was told that a turkey vulture and its mate were almost on me
I saw just the one flapping about head height off to my right trying to gain some altitude
then a few miles later a deer jumped between my bike and the one in front (Jaime's)
