What weight of oil to use?

Should I go with what's in the manual and use 10w40 or is 20w50 synthetic okay? I run Lucas 20w50 in my Roadliner and it seems to work great.  I realize that the Valk. is a flat six and not a V-twin like the Yamaha (both are great bikes). I don't ride in the winter so I am thinking the heavier oil would be okay.

Thanks

Bob

You'll get more replies to this than a political post!

I've got 190,000 miles on my 2 Valks and have run Mobil 1 15W-50 exclusively.  Both engines still run like new.

If you don't run it in the winter I wouldn't hesitate to use a 20-50 oil.  Here's a outstanding link on the subject:

I run the Mobil 1 15w50, also.  It runs strong and shifts smoothly. Just make sure whatever you use, it is not energy conserving.

I know!  I hate to ask oil questions as sometimes it causes some commotion. :tickedoff:  I think I know pretty well what to put in a big V-twin, but this flat 6 is a different animal.

Thanks

lucas 20w50 gets a bad report.

I run amsoil 10w30/30HD diesel oil. the smoothest shifting oil I have ever used. Basically it is a straight 30w oil, but being a syn meets the 10w30 spec.

Sorry, NOT interested in anything that Amzoil makes.  I had previously read their report and it is simply their report and analysis. I do appreciate the feedback.

Yea, but it's the same price at AutoZone.  I buy from AutoZone, they let me return the used oil to their recycling center/tank in the back.  I don't think Wally will take your used oil.....  but, I have never checked, just haven't noticed it back in the automotive department.

Used oil not a problem here.  I have a 55 gal. drum that I dump it in and a buddy of mine is the manager at the local Oreilly's says he will take it there.  I used to dump it out behind my garage.  I live out of town.

Thanks

I have used Rotella T from 2002 in all bikes. My Valk. shifts smooth. Some complain of rough clunks in shifting but I get and hear "CLICKS" when I shift.  ;)
