When I win tonight, I'm gonna buy my own bank...and sit in it...and grin. Then, I'm gonna buy 365 Valkyries; one for each day of the year and keep them someplace warm so's I can ride whenever and wherever I want...after I get there on my private jet...flown by Pussy Galore...stocked with filet mignon...tender asparagus...olathe sweet corn...idaho mashed potatoes with real butter...and moose tracks ice cream. Then, I'm gonna build a huge animal sanctuary for the unwanted, unloved, unfed. Then, I'm gonna breathe. You? ???

Lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math... (And I'll admit, I bought one. First one in 5 or 10 years...)

They were talking about this on the radio the other day and said that according to the experts, the very first thing you should do is sign the back of it and probably get some pictures of it. The second thing is to begin putting together a financial team to manage the money because there's no you're going to know the ins and outs of managing that kind of money, and then you can work on anonymity, security and how you're going to spend it.
It would be nice to have a different set of problem for a while though.

Actually, the correct quote is: The lottery is a tax on the stupid.
I've bought Powerball tickets (one or two) when it's this high...... so far, it's still stupid.
If I do win, the first thing to do is have yourself declared dead, change your name (and move).

Sell the house and all assets, buy my own island/land away from civilization for the most part and do whatever the heck I want to do without anybody telling me otherwise. I'm a tightwad for the most part, so not really sure all that moola would be a curse or a blessing? Most say that kind of money is a curse with people coming out of the workwork who want to be best buds. Thus the reason I would move far, far away from most of civilization and not be bugged by anyone. My aunt when I was in my early teens had her husband die being the Captain of a vessel sinking going down with the ship at sea. Her husband left her a sizeable million or more life insurance policy of which she, with her deadbeat new husband, blew on foolish items like new corvette, new motorhome, new EVERYTHING in a matter of a few years. They currently both work at 12-16 dollar per hour jobs just like the rest of us do living in a trailer park type home pretty much broke or should I say living within their very limited means. Sizeable money has a tendency to bring out the worst in people, but I am willing to take that chance. gotta go now and thanks for reminding me to run downtown to get a powerball ticket today, would hate to not win.

Jess, Do you have to declare the win in your name? Isn't there some loophole, like starting a Trust and declare it in the Trust's name? You of course being the primary on the Trust just so your actual name is not broadcast to the handout population?

I would be the only valkyrie dealer in the world. Building custom valkyries with the 1800 motor and the classic valkyrie body. Pay every bill I have off, buy some land build a house and huge shop. Probably have the largest gun collection in the world inside the largest underground high security vault. 100,000 square feet would probably do it. Buy all my good buddies on here a bike of their choice

But... the people I work with wanted to pull theirs together and do a group buy. I was going to pass. But then I thought if they win and all quit and leave my sorry ass here I couldn't bear the pain and humiliation. So I kicked in my 3 bucks. I have no idea what I would do, besides not showing up for work tomorrow .

Don't forget the taxes!!! 558 after taxes The $558,000,000 is if you take the immediate payout instead of the annuity over 29 years, you still need to pay taxes on top of the winnings, so the actual take home would be probably closer to $350,000,000 if you take the lump sum option after taxes... (The big "900 Million!" number they keep trumpeting is really just a 29 year annuity, not a 900 million lump sum)

Jess, Do you have to declare the win in your name? Isn't there some loophole, like starting a Trust and declare it in the Trust's name? You of course being the primary on the Trust just so your actual name is not broadcast to the handout population? I don't know anything about lottery rules (and they probably vary per lottery and state), although I do recall reading that a person could decline to appear on TV and grin like an idiot when they hand you a big check. I also know relatively little about trusts, estates, tax, financial law. It made for boring stuff in school, I never had any money, and my clients never had any money, so I pretty much blew it off. If you already had an inter vivos pour over family trust created, I don't know why you couldn't pour your lottery winning into one. But the real damage is the papers and news giving everyone your name as soon as they know it, even if the proceeds do go into a trust. Which reminds me of a somewhat obscure RVN movie from 1977 (Rolling Thunder) where the thugs push William Devane's hand down the disposal to get him to tell where the gold coins are. He doesn't tell, and it ends badly for the thugs later. A young Tommy Lee Jones tells his wife "we have to go kill some folks" when she asks him where he is going with Devane (Mexico).

Caviar OUT, the rest sounds great. skip the private mountain and just buy the entire moutain range or entire island/region. So, why would anyone take the 29 year annuity plan? Who expects to live much past the 29 years? I'd rather live 15-20 years and be SUPER happy.

Figure at least 25% will go to taxes, so that still leaves a hefty amount for a new set of tires. I've always wanted a chance to create a "chair"...i.e., a trust fund, at the college two of my girls graduated from. They're the two I lost to cancer and I'd like nothing more than to set up a couple large trusts for students, one for those with similar endeavors as the girls, and one left open for anyone. Off the top would be at least 10% for churches and missions. Next pay off all our bills, then establish a large education trust so that all those in our families that want to attend college or some tech school would never have to worry over where the money is coming from, their education would be paid for and would be there forever. Obviously I'd give all our kids the maximum without having to pay tax on it. That would amount to a nice sum right away because my wife can give the max amount, I can do likewise, then we can give the max in a joint donation. At the end, I'd love to keep this house and have a major remodel done on it, which must include a covered porch across the front large enough for a couple rocking chairs. Lastly, I'd probably buy a new car, this one is 8 yrs. old and just turned over 58k. The ash tray is full of gum wrappers to it's time to trade.

The Texas lotto came into existence when I was in college, and a statistics course...the second guy to win a jackpot FOUND his ticket blowing down the street...we had a ball with that in class. The take away is that for some insane number of years after this event...your odds of winning the lotto are the same to any significant/rational estimation whether you buy a ticket or not.

When I bought my single ticket the guy seemed surprised "Just one?"
I told him that statistically the odds are about the same if you buy one or one thousand...
He just gave me a blank stare and rang me up after that.

I'd go for a ride!
I like this answer The national lottery in Canada reaches 60 - 70 mil max, and there are no taxes on cash or prize winnings in Canada. Even 60 mil would be much, much more than I may want to contend with. Every scammer would be after you, your kids, and family after they publish your name ....don't know if I would like to live like that. Imagine what 500 + mil would be like with all the media attention (which in this day and age would be impossible to keep clear of). Aside from working, I basically like to ride and fish...if I won a lottery I would probably retire early and spend my time riding and fishing. Let me win a few mil so that a comfortable retirement is secured and I can give my daughters a nice boost and keep the old Valk up to snuff (OK, maybe I'd splurge buy another one or so as well)

If I am lucky enough to win, I will do my best to keep it unknown to others.
But yes - get lawyer, and financial planner and maybe some others being paid to make sure I will never have to work again if I don't want to. Payoff all current debt, fix up my older cars, get the house redecoaration going full bore, get my Valk mechanically perfect.
Help family where necessary, give money where I want. Maybe get a beachplace.

I am a good tax guy and money manager. For a small fee I could show you how to live comfortably for the rest of your life on a modest $500 million. As stupid as that sounds, I will bet a steak dinner to a happy meal that whoever wins it will be broke within 10 years.

Well my chances of winning are no worse than anyone else who played so if I win the first thing is to see the accountant.
Since my youngest is only a sophomore in HS, we will stay here for another 2 years but do some long over due projects...new kitchen, bathrooms and so on.
I have a good idea on how much all relatives will be gifted, all my nieces and nephews college tuition will be taken care of. My children will be set for life but not in lump sum gifts and their college expenses taken care of.
St.Jude Children's Hospital will receive a very nice gift as will the Wounded Warrior Project.
Since both my in-laws have Alzheimer's they will get the best full time care in a different/new single story house instead of the Colonial they currently live in.
As for myself and the Mrs., well a nice new Goldwing, a log cabin in the middle of about 100 acres, some dirt bikes and some 4x4 vehicles to get back and forth to the cabin.
About a year ago I read about a man who started a company that helped people in the US when there were natural disasters kind f like first responders for emergency clean up and I thought that was a great idea.
If you're in it, good luck and may your wishes come true.
