That happened to me and my family 30 years ago at the Calgary zoo. My wife, three daughters and I had no idea what was coming! When those buggers let lose, they can throw their crap over 24 feet.

I've seen hippos do that at the zoo but thankfully NOT up close and personal. 

If I was a hippo, I would get as close to people as possible and let it fly.

I'm sure there is some reason that natural selection has created hippos to do that. But I can't for the life of me figure a good reason for having your crap shot all over your herd members.

Most animals use their tongue (or left hand).  These behemoths cannot.  Built in TP.

They spend most of the time in the river anyway.

Hippos do that to mark their territory.  The flinging causes the poop to cover more of an area. Just my $.02 worth of useless knowledge.
