On February 3, 1959, rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, together with the pilot, Roger Peterson. The event later became known as "The Day the Music Died", after singer-songwriter Don McLean so referred to it in his song "American Pie".

I also understand that Waylon Jennings was supposed to be on that flight as well.

Waylon claimed he is the one who lost the coin toss, but, there is some controversy about it.

Thats an accident that should never have happened.  The pilot was newly commercial rated but not instrument rated.

I didn't think you could be commercial rated without instruments. Maybe back then? crazy2

I had a morning paper route at that time, and on this day, 2-4-59, I had to deliver the news to my customers. I was 14 then and listened to all of their music and still enjoy it today.
