My alternator has been making some noises for a couple months or so. Searched on here and found some others that had the noise when it was cold. Well it has been relatively cold here this year so I thought it was ok. But it progressively got worse. Figured it was a bad bearing or something because I had put in a cheap alternator a couple years ago that I bought off Amazon. So I have today of and decide I'm going to tear into it and get it fixed. Pulled out relatively easy and as I get it out I realize the nut holding on the four bladed drive is really loose. So I tighten it up and check the smoothness of the bearings and everything seems good. So I decide I will put it back in and see how it sounds. OMG !!! I tried and tried and tried to get it back in.  tickedoff Took a couple breaks and was getting pissed and frustrated. Finally 4 hours later I get it in.  Smiley Get everything back together and fire it up and it sounds great ! No noise, nice and smooth.
Decide to go in and cleaned up and go for a shakedown ride to make sure everything is ok. Just about to take off and I realize my little led voltage light is all red and no green.  tickedoff Turn her off and figure I must have pulled some wiring loose in all my struggles to get it back in. Look it over and don't see anything obvious, so I figure I'm going to have to take it back out.  Cry Go inside and sulk for a bit. But what I failed to mention and had almost forgot about was when I started to remove the alternator I had forgot to disconnect the battery and remembered when I got a spark when trying to remove it.  uglystupid2 So my little pea brain go into full gear and I remember reading about a dog bone fuse. I think oh could I be so lucky that that's all it is ? Sure enough that's it. The spare is in the little side compartment, get her in and SUCCESS ! So to make a long story short. I hate it when I do dumbass moves, but I love it when I get lucky.  Smiley

"Someone" said.... "I'd rather be lucky than good any day!"
Glad you found your noise AND fixed the fuse.

Make sure you get a (couple) replacement fuses.  I'd hate to see a head brother stranded.

Thanks, I was thinking the same thing. Are those a Honda specific fuse or would a car parts place have them ?

I'm not sure on that, I've never bought a spare.

While you had it off it wouldn't have taken more than a few minutes to take it apart and clean it up with some electric motor cleaner and some compressed air. Makes it run much cooler and adds a lot of life to you unit. Maybe next time.  cooldude

You are right. I got so excited that it was just the loose nut that I focused on tightening it and getting it back in. My first alt. job went so smoothly. This time was FRUSTRATING. The next time I'm going to start drinking a couple hours beforehand.  2funny

I have read that it is also used in Honda cars, so any auto parts store should have it. I wonder if it's posted in the shoptalk list of aftermarket replacement parts (can't remember the proper name).

Meat - its the same fuse used in the Accord and a bunch of other Honda models.  cooldude

Had a main fuse fail just from being old on a bone stock '83 Wing one time on the way back from Sturgis, and fabricated a fix roadside in the dark out of an automotive blade-type fuse and ring terminals. That got me home, where I discovered the spare fuse hiding in the plastic cover  uglystupid2

Later, I walked into a NAPA store once for un-motorcycle related business and saw a box of Honda fuses hanging on the pegboard behind the counter. Bought them just to have them. Keep the spares inside the little plastic box. They can fail of old age, even without electrical mods or  "dumbass troubles"...

Well for further update. I went to Napa as Gig suggested. They didn't have any in stock but would get them the next day , they came in packs of 3 so I got 2 packs. Go pick them up this morning and go to put a couple in the spare fuse holder. While I'm doing this I look at the fuse I put in a few days ago and something doesn't look right. I take it out to check it over and low and behold it's 3 fuses stuck together with some dried up grease holding them together .  uglystupid2 So evidently for a week I've been riding around with a 165 amp fuse. crazy2 So to recap Napa does have them if anybody needs one in a bind or Ive got 8 extras now  Shocked
