Some of my deeper thoughts of late

Ok, so when you get hurt and can't do much you think.  Scary, yes, but sometimes you discover things about yourself (and others).

You can have a pity party or you can become more focused on the positive things about your life.

Since I hurt my hand I have had to be ready to accept the reality of having new limitations.  I'll be honest, I didn't do well with that at first.

Today after a beautiful ride and spending time in the breeze (that seems to clear my head) I realized a few things.

First of all, my life is still blessed.  Maybe more so during the last six weeks than ever before.  The experience has taught me that what my hand looks like, how strong or weak it will be does not change who I am.

Second, my situation is nowhere near as serious as others.  

After hearing the news Mark shared about his test results, I found myself thinking more about him and other great people I know that have more serious challenges than I do.

Others have had multiple injuries and are living with more severe limitations.

So I thought, so my finger may not bend right again, its going to be more crooked than it already was.  So what.

I went back to work last week and the limitations are not as significant even now than I anticipated.

Life is filled with challenges, its not about avoiding all of them, yes being smart, careful and safe is a responsibility I certainly take more seriously, but there will always be another challenge.  It's how we overcome them.

I have a long way to go to be totally recovered regardless of what that means, but whatever the final outcome, today I can honestly say I'm fine with it.

For those if you that have no limitations, I'm glad you can only imagine what it is like.  For those of you facing a challenge, look around, there is always someone facing something more difficult.

Don't stop reaching for the "moon" however, what you actually attain is just perfect.

Without dribbling on, I'll just say God has blessed me this week beyond what I deserve and I am truly thankful.

I don't know how bad the hand is but seems like you can still ride and do your job... You have a great way of looking at it so far and that is most of the battle.  Good luck with the hand in the future.

Like you, Chris, I have found that a self generated 'pity party' does nothing.

Over the course of years I've had a few things happen to me but I'm indeed blessed with reasonable health and an active mind.  Mark's present health problem is cause for concern but i take a great satisfaction in knowing that two of my kids are willing to donate a kidney for Mark if it comes to that. 

Again, I am blessed with a closely knit family too!

Chris, a saying I have been using for quite some time and that is "Things can always be worse".

I have not read how you hurt your hand and to what degree but I hope it continues to recover.

Over the years I've learned to step back and see the struggles others have gone or are going through and it makes any trouble we are having seem less. That's not to say our own daily issues are not important to us as individuals or as a family unit it just helps to put the big picture in a better view.

Good luck getting that hand more and more functional

If you ever feel a self pity party coming on, and are anywhere near a major hospital, such as MD Anderson in Houston, just go there and walk around for a little.  Guaranteed you will come away feeling blessed to the max.

Good post and I'm glad you are continuing to make progress. Yes, you are very lucky and blessed. As for others, my heart goes out to Xtracho and his family. He left for a ride and never in his dreams did he realize it would be his last.

I've been lucky myself and probably had a Guardian Angel as I totaled out 2 Interstates 8 yrs apart.
Although I suffered serious injuries in the first one and walked away unhurt from a 65mph deer strike in the second incident, I can't say why I'm still alive today. It must be a crazy kind of love/infatuation to go through what we do and still strap the riding boots on when everyone else says we're crazy.

I appreciate your attitude, some of the hardest things to deal with are those we can do nothing about.  Lost my lovely 30 year old daughter 7 hears ago this week, I miss her but it is what it is and I know where she's gone and that I'll see her again.
