"Cheap Bastard" Bike Lift

Over on the NakedGoldWings site where I'm also a member there was a posting about making a lift with a "Cheap" bike jack. I thought I would share it with you all.  Also,  it should work nicely with the Harbor Freight wheel chock that seems to be popular on this site ....

Very interesting idea.  A few questions, which you might not be able to answer, since you state that you found it elsewhere:
1) That's not a wing up there.  Any ideas on how it handles more weight than the ~500 pounds that is up there?
2) More importantly, how in the hell do you get it up on that platform?  I suppose you could build a ramp out of the same plywood the platform is made out of.
3) How stable was it?

It is an intersting idea and seems to work in those pictures.  However, I noticed that the jack used is a bigger jack than what you might get at Sears or HF (have seen those before.... can't remember the name right now).   Harbor Freight has Bike Lifts listed for 299.-350 regularly and sometimes even cheaper on sale, and even less expensive when you use the 20% off coupon.  I had one, that I got for close to 200.00 NEW after sale price and coupons, and it worked ok... but it ended up being a parking pad for one of my bikes and it takes up quite a bit of room, so I sold it.  I now have (2) HF MC/ATV Lifts that take up less room, and are more functional for me at least.   I also have a HF bike dolly (that isn't made anymore) that you lift the bike on and can move it around the garage all winter etc.

And being a "Cheap Bastard" myself, I made a "cheap bastard garage stool" from an old computer desk chair.... just removed the back of it and keep it in the garage.  It rolls around on wheels, is adjustable for height and has been a back saver many times.

Have you not taught yours how to jump when you whistle?  They learn the trick quite easily.

Of course I have, but we've been concentrating on pure height, and she's not getting any motion to the side, which is obviously required.

I can hold my own in a smartass competition...

Obviously the lift will be lower when the lift is down and yep, you will need to build a small ramp.

How stable is it ??  I couldn't really tell you but there where no complaints from the post

I have another question; What is the advanage of this over a $55. adaper, a $70-$80. Sears jack. Seems to me the bike would be easer to service / repair on a Sears Jack I.E. , replace tires, ect. ???

Those are all great ideas.
But call me a pessimist. Especially with the last one. The base is so wide I would either strain my back leaning over it or fall off of it.
Good thing OSHA has no control over us warriors in our own garage.
