Came in this morning from Lesiwton, MT, and I have the phone number it came from. They sure make it sound official, almost tempted to call them back and say something that will lead them on for a time. Wondering if I should forward this on to the authorities, would love to see them get nailed for it. Any suggestions?

John,
As a CPA that deals with this all of the time I can tell you that the IRS would like to have the info but there is very little they can do with it.  The callers have the ability to put false numbers on their phones so that they are almost impossible to trace.  There have even been a few instances were if you call back the call is routed to a 900 phone in the Bahamas or Africa and you will get a huge bill for making the call.  Here is link to the IRS fraud hotline for anyone who would like it.

https://www.irs.gov/Individuals/How-Do-You-Report-Suspected-Tax-Fraud-Activity%3F

Now if you can just figure out if this is the real Me or Maybe a fraudster has hi-jacked my identity to get your PII.

BTW, you all have my permission to tell the callers to F*uck Off as the IRS will NEVER call you without first sending you a notice in the mail to set an appointment.

When I got my message, I googled the number captured on my phone.

The hit list was long, and the comments funny.

I no longer put up with this. I use my answering machine to filter all of my calls. If I don't recognize the call number, or if it's a 'private call" the machine takes over and says that it's filtering and to leave a message. People who I know, leave messages, others don't.   90% of those calls, don't leave a message. Credit card calls, banks, 'urgent' crap, threats,  etc, can go urinate in an upwards direction on a piece of manilla.

I forgot to add.  I'm old fashioned, I have three cordless phones and an answering machine, all on a landline. Except for a 'pay as you go' cell phone for emergencies, I've not joined the advanced technology generation.

Suits me.

RABull, I'm well aware of how the IRS works on collections, etc.   I retired from the State of Fla. Dept. of Revenue after 30 years, worked with the IRS numerous times. Also while working for the Fla. DOR. for a number of years I worked on a nat'l. task force funded out of D.C., did some traveling throughout the U.S. and worked with the Feds at different levels. But, there are many out there that will fall for this kind of scam, and it doesn't seem to be restricted to older folks. I might give the authorities a call, just in case they can use the info.

Piss up a rope-good un Wayne!  2funny You KNOW how shy and retiring I are!  Roll Eyes I do have a cell phone-cheaper than a land line here-and if not on my cell list or shows private I let it go to voice mail. Absofrikkinlutely NONE/ZERO/NADA have left me a voice mail.  :2funny:I just hoe and PRAY I maintain my faculties and DO NOT git sucked into any bull crap schemes or farces. A day rarely goes by where someone somewhere Doesn't git sucked into the B S.  Undecided And far as I'm concerned that IS the TRULY sad part.  Lips Sealed  RIDE SAFE.

I got one a couple months ago. Not much to go on unless you have a name, address or phone number for them to go on

Yup, had them for three days running until they finally gave up.  They sure do try to intimidate you with some strong language, was kind of funny to listen to.   On calls like this I usually let them get going then just lay the phone down and let them talk to the air, time is money with them, and if you hang up they can go on to someone else that much quicker.  Its a percentage racket, the more calls they make the better chance they have of snagging someone.

I got a call like this too and did call them back right away to give them my CC # so I wouldn't get sued!!!!
I didn't call the number they said to but did a "call back" on the number they called from, but it wouldn't go through! So I'm waiting to get summoned...

Ok, I didn't call to give a CC# but I was going to act like they got a sucker but really mess with them.  I know the IRS doesn't do things like that.

Wondering if I should forward this on to the authorities, would love to see them get nailed for it. Any suggestions?

I did forward both numbers to a "hotline" for these types of calls.  The lady said they are getting many reports of these calls.

Later in the day, I used the link given by RDABull and left the IRS the phone # it came from, not the # they said to call back on. Came from Lewiston, MT which is in the center of the state.....out in the middle of nowhere. I'll not do anything else with it but if they call back I might answer it just to see what they have to say.

Haven't got the IRS call, but did a new one to me.  Got a call from a chick saying that my Microsoft registration for Window was about to expire.   It was a recording so couldn't ask questions, Like which window was she talking about or on which computer.  Didn't call the number either.  Thought it was funny, as the registration never expires.

Get the same calls up here!

Revenue Canada is aware of the calls but can't seem to do anything about it other that put out a public warning on the news channels telling people not to callback or give out any info.

Don't know about the calls you guy's get, but, they even say "Police action is in progress against you ..... blah blah blah" ...... which can scare older folk especially.

I wish there was a way to put a stop to them!

With the amount of people that cheat on their taxes this is probably a pretty good scam. The effective rate of the Nigerian scams I would imagine is pretty low, but I could see where this could get some people to freak out. And then if you did fall for it and had cheated on your taxes would be reluctant to say anything to the IRS .

They called this morning saying that the IRS is coming on Wednesday to arrest me and take my bank accounts. I still have time to resolve the issue by allowing them access to my accounts.     RIGHT!!!......Come and get me boys!

My Nigerian prince friend who just happens to have millions of dollars but is stuck in Eugene Oregon because his wallet got stolen and needed my SSN so he could get out of America and will pay me back 100 times,  says those calls are legit and you should just pay it.
For what its worth, every dealing I've had with the IRS was pretty good.
Idiot ex-wife claimed EXEMPT on the W-2 and because I was the only one with a SSN on file as active, I had to pay. Filed jointly.

My deceased lawyer friend would regale us with tales of clients who would tell him breathlessly of a great deal and ask him what he thought of it. Some wouldn't believe it was a scam.
