I found an IS that I'm  going to check out next week. If it checks out, I'm going to buy it.
Its a 99 with 61k on it.
Any suggestions on a checklist I can run down while I'm looking at the bike?

Just give it a good look over to see how well its been maintained. Ask about the maintenance history, whats been done and when, and, also, who did the work.

Switch pod on clutch side SHOULD be self explanatory. Pods-saddle bags-trunk-NO cracks. Same with the fairing-no cracks. Check ALL lighting BEFORE test ride! Pull side covers and look at any P O wiring job(s). Ride it long enough to get it heated up. Radio-lights-brakes-clutch-engine-ALL need to work. Look underneath for any welds-bends-breaks-ANYTHING that doesn't look quite right. DO NOT be afraid to wait an extra day or two. RIDE SAFE.

All good points. But you would not test ride mine unless you were on the back seat.... cooldude Or you had put the cash in my hand already...

Recently got a 99 IS with 50k. Very well kept.

Aside from the regular stuff...

Double check the lighting. If you can, turn the bike on in a dark garage.

When I got mine in a private sale the bike had some dash lights out, a headlight out, and a tail light was out. easily replaced but check it out before you find yourself discovering this at night.

Check the fork seals. They were likely causing problems when I got the bike. (Handlebar shake when I let go of the bars.)

Intake O rings. If they haven't been changed yet they are probably due.

Air filter. Ask when last changed.

These were the issues I've had with mine. Fairly minor.

Besides the above, are the tires safe to ride home on?  (learn to read the Mfgr's date codes, for age)(week-year)

How old is the gas in the tank?

How old is the battery?

Is the oil on the dip crummy?

Does she settle to a nice smooth 900-1K rpm idle?

Getting on the ground under the engine and bag guards will tell you if it's been down or dropped (and how badly).

If the price is a bit high, I'm always looking to find things that need repaired to make a bit lower offer (in cash).

Good hunting.  cooldude

Look inside the tank for rust.  Neither of mine have any sign of it but I have a freind ( or had RIP ) that bought an IS with low miles it did. Looked new but had troubles because of rust in the tank. Particles got into carbs and well it took some time to sort it out.
