Well Harley riders sometimes have fragile egos. I had to get my picture taken today and told the lady my hair was messed up from riding my motorcycle.
Harley guy "Son you better get that bike home it's fixing to rain.
Me "You ride or you don't"
Harley guy "I rode my truck down, to much chrome to clean"
Me "You can ride 'em or clean 'em"
Harley guy Walks off pissed
Me Giant smile.

However, I hate riding in the rain. I've ridden in everything from mist through torrential downpours and I hate it every time. Worst one was with Old2Soon, Da Prez, Rainmaker, and Tom on my last leg to Inzane last year. Rained so hard and nowhere to pull off. Soaked my gloves through in 30 seconds. Couldn't see a thing. Just not my cup-o-tea.

I hate leaving in the rain but if I hit rain after leaving it's part of the ride. NOT a fan of ain riding but I deal with it! RIDE SAFE.

I am a wimp, if it looks like rain, I stay home. Valk doesn't mind getting wet, But I do. Being retired, for 8 years now, I can pick the days I ride on. Yeah, I have been caught off guard and got wet a few times. Also don't like riding in the high winds. When it hits 40 plus mph, I stay home. Yeah I am a wimp, not a HD rider

If I get caught it's one thing. But, I won't intentionally ride in the rain unless absolutely necessary. I have been on the scooter in the snow, rain, sleet and hail all of which hurts, and I hate hurt.

Light to medium and intermittent rain is OK. It's the nonstop downpours I have problems with, because at some point I can't see. I have all the gear to stay mostly dry, and a face shield, but when the prescription eyeglasses, face shield and windshield are all fouled and fogged, I feel like I need a white cane to poke out front to see if there is something out there.
When it's bad, I generally find a good safe cage, going a reasonable steady speed, to follow his tail lights. And I have gone a long ways, seeing only those tail lights, and nothing much else.
If you are making freeway miles, you can usually catch a break, after enough miles.
In a pinch, I can see good enough to ride without my glasses (in daylight), but the G has seen fit to indicate on my license that I am unsafe without my glasses.
Sometimes you're a rider, and sometimes you're the Uboat commander (without the periscope).

Like most of you guys I dont care toride in the rain. If its going to rain going to work I drive the truck. If it rains on the way home oh well. I will dry. Its only 9.3 miles from work to home. BUT. if I am leaving on a trip and its raining I may hold for a hour or two to see if it lets up but if there is no sign I ride. I rode to Ashville in the rain most of the way. I like Gary have riden in everything from a few sprinkles to a full out toad strangler. Its no fun but I will not let a little rain keep from getting to where I need to be.....

The rain gear just kept some of me dry, but there was a stretch, can't recall where we were, that we hit some monster downpour. It was on a road with construction so there was only one lane. No where to pull off so I just tried to keep an eye on the taillight in front of me. Everything else was just shades of gray. Gloves got trashed. Funny thing..... I won a pair of those glove "covers" at the previous inzane. I called them glove condoms, my wife said they were the same gloves she mixes cancer drugs with. Anyway, tried to put these things on when we stopped for the rain gear and they just ripped trying to get them on over the gloves. Maybe too small. So my gloves got soaked. Took days to dry out.

I remember the rain. I am not ashamed to have stopped and put on the raingear before the water was all the way through my clothing. And the hot coffee hit the spot at McDonald's when we all got back together!

If I can check the radar before leaving I may make my decision to wait or ride thru With the smart phones its easy to check when getting gas - really important in a place like south dakota or kansas It seems it almost always rains on my way to Americade, I only delay if its actively lightning or the radar shows red. For some unknown reason on the way home from GOTF with some of the wild bunch and in the middle of the toad strangler I decided uncharacteristically to leave my spot as the caboose and zoom past Tbird Popcorn and BigAl with my new Exedra 200 rear tire that thing was truly sticking to the road like Joe says," crap on a baby white blanket" That was probably the only time I will ever pass Al on a ride I think I was doing 80, and yeah Al passed me again after that one We all laugherd about how nuts we were, but at the time the bike just was handling great. I think we had another 300 miles of downpour after that too As for my buddy G-Man, yeah he dont like rain

Wife and I were on my Interstate one time heading for New York. It was one of those days where it looked threatening as we traversed hundreds of miles and we were in and out of our raingear over a course of several hours but yet it hadn't actually rained. Finally, I decided to forgo my gear. As luck would have it, within a half hour we ran smack into a good ole fashion gully washer.
I "thought" I could find an overpass or gas station with an overhang but we were in a sparsely populated area. I was pretty drenched and finally found a hotel that we could stop at for the night. When I went in to the lobby to book a room, I was about as wet as if I had just climbed out of a swimming pool.
It all makes for some good and humorous memories.

Ding ding - we have a winner ! I don't LEAVE in the rain if I can avoid it - but if I get caught out - I suck it up and do what I have to. When I ride to work - if it's raining when it's time to go home - I put on the gear and grit my teeth...

In 1983, I took a small law case for a neighbor's old mother, two counties North of where I usually practiced. I had just bought my CB750K with vetter and decided to take it to court, it was a beautiful sunny day (when I left). I had no rain gear (had never owned any up to this time). I just wore my jacket and tie and dress loafers. Well, I got dumped on, and mud spattered for the last hour before I arrived at the courthouse. The old lady (my client) did not have to show for this hearing and I'm glad she didn't. As I walked into the courtroom, water streaming down me, and squishing noisily out of my loafers with every step, I was quite the image of professionalism (wherever I stopped, I created my own puddle). My opposing counsel could not stop laughing, but everyone else just stared at me, dumbfounded. The judge gave me the stink eye, and I said I apologize for my appearance your honer, I got stuck in the rain (no reason to mention motorcycles). I guess you don't own an umbrella? Well, I do sir, but left it at home. The case went OK and I won as I was supposed to. Years later, the scene(s) with Joe Peshi in My Cousin Vinni, reminded me of that day. ( You was serious about that judge?) The ride home was a bit cold..... until I dried back out. We live and we learn (sometimes). I was able to salvage my clothing, but the loafers were history.

Rainy 750/4 stories..... so a buddy of mine calls & ask if I can pick up his wife from work, her car's gonna need a tow, busted cv joint. I say sure, no prob, but you know it's fixin' to pour down & I'm on the 750k. He says, no prob she rides, I say O-tay. I get there in a full blown toad choker & she never batts an eye, takes the helmet I offer & swings into the saddle with me, coolness It's 'bout 25 miles of interstate & then 1/2 mile city streets to house, raining sideways whole way. She never once complains runnin' 70+ right into the teeth of it on the highway, I'm impressed! We get to the bottom of the off-ramp & catch the red. I plant both feet firmly, stand up to stretch.............. & she SCREAMS "f*** me" when all that cold water rolls down the only place she was still dry (Scared me so bad I think I pee'd alittle!)
Good times & memories

I got caught in a rain/hail/tornader like storm comin' over the mountain from Boone down into Todd. Riding an old FLH......pulled over and dang near slid into a ditch with me and wife strugglin to keep it from goin down any further. Couldn't see a thing but heard some bikes pull up next to me. Those angels pulled us up and righted the bike. One guy was on a beautiful green and silver IS and the other was riding a HD. I'll never forget the sound of that Valk as he started it back up an pulled away. I ride one now......... It all happened so fast I dint get their names so Thanks Fellas whoever you are. And no, I don't ride in the rain if I don't have to!!

Man we DID run the gamut that day! Coffee also hit da spot. But on the other hand we all survived and now we gots another road tale! Don't recollect the name of the place but there at 83 and I-90 when we hit the eye and someone sez It's good as in dry and we ran like 4 or 5 miles and hit another rain storm! We were sweating by the time we hit the rest area and had to peel off some gear! And some wonderful machine coffee! AND I'd share wind with ANY of y'all again ANYWHERE. RIDE SAFE.

You won't see a Harley out around here unless the thermometer hits 60 degrees. They are SO fragile, those Harley boys; not to be caught dead in anything other than leather that just doesn't hold the heat like a full suit. That would not be up to their important image-bearing standards. Besides, do-rags just aren't insulatory. and cut-offs are just plain chilly.

"Son you better get that bike home it's fixing to rain"
"ohh REALLY do you do much RIDING ???"
I'm officially not allowed to talk bike brands at my local watering hole I've been told I hurt too many feelings. This ....um lady goes to me "why don't you have a Harley" I looked at her "like that" and was about to say something when from the crowd I hear "NO NO don't even get him started"
I heard from the assistant bartender how the "prestige bikers" couldn't believe I parked {my HONDA} right in front of the place. Funny how they were saying that ABOUT me but not TOO me
this guy was in there a while ago spouting off at the mouth about what happens when you go airborne on pavement on a street bike. I'm listening to him for a little bit when I get a whiff ....what's that he is FULL OF STUFF. I go excuse me...how many times have you had your street bike airborne on pavement ? again another looks at me like that moment I just get a BIG old stuff eating grin and wait. As he is thinking about getting into it with me he looks at the bartender and the three guys at the end of the bar all of whom look at him look down and start shaking their heads, mumbling you don't want to do that with THIS guy {giggle}
Nothing like Street Cred {you should see me at the BMW rallies}
It's not what YOU say about YOU
It's what OTHERS say about YOU
dan
PS Joe that is a really sharp bike, Way to pretty for someone like me. hope to get some pics at inzane. you going joe ?

Sooooooooo It matters what bike you ride? It will only rain if you are riding a Harley? I was just wondering what bike to take if it was cloudy out, the Harley or the Honda? Now I know.

I've left Lacasa when it was dry KNOWING full well that I wuz gonna git wet BEFORE I arrived at my destination. Kaka happens! I ride with a couple of H/D riders out of a LOT of them that I would share wind with Anytime and Anywhere that do NOT turn into wusses because of some unscheduled precipitation! They ARE Riders! But as I inferred-they are the exception. RIDE SAFE.

If you are tucking pants into boots (or wearing high-waters ) you are doing it wrong. My rain bibs have elastic straps under the boot, keeping the pants leg down well under the boot top. Rain down the neck is my complaint (shiver). Having worn a stupid tie most of my life, I hate tight collars of any kind, but must snug it up tight to keep the H2O out.

I've ridden in the rain. I've ridden in the heat. I've ridden in the wind. I'm going to confess up front that there is a large percentage of Harley riders that I just don't like to be around because of their attitudes. Then I'm going to say clearly that there are riders and there are posers on almost any brand of motorcycle. If anyone tells you that all the riders on any particular brand fit a specific profile I'm going to tell you I suspect that person doesn't get out much.

Your supposed to use 5 condoms for your gloves, One for each finger not one for the whole glove sheese.

And WHO pulled over to put on rain gear and WHO kept rollin? Gary my friend-when Ross and I left R Js place and headed east we hit that MONSTER rain storm shortly after crossing into Illinois. Made the ones we ran thru look like the shower in a motel room. I hate leaving in the rain but if I hit rain after leaving it's part of the ride. NOT a fan of ain riding but I deal with it! RIDE SAFE. That's how I feel. But still hate it. I can think of much more better uses of those little rubber thingys.

I lost a pair of boots on the way to the first Johnson City Inzane. Rained really hard really fast. Rode until I couldn't see and pulled under the next overpass. Felt like I was sitting in a puddle. Old pair of Timberland boots were soaked through. Never dried out completely. Took a ride with 98T and Mad6Gun to get a new pair of boots nearby the hotel. Made sure they waterproof.

I guess I'm in the minority, I love riding in storms. Hail, not so much. Riding I-12 in Louisiana from Slidell to Baton Rouge once on my 74 CB750 chopper I got caught in a rain that was so hard it looked like it was coming up from the road. Springer front end, no front fender...I didn't know anyone could be so wet. At least it was a summer storm so I wasn't cold. I wouldn't trade the memory of that ride for anything...nor would I wish to repeat it!
Ride Safe,

My wettest ride was after one of Britman's Memorial Day rides - I extended the trip and after going to Washington, DC had backtracked to Raleigh, NC to see an old fraternity brother. As I left his home the next morning, it was misting but I thought it would end pretty quickly so left the rain gear off. 2 hours later, after the mist became rain became a downpour, I stopped at a McDonald's to get breakfast and change out. I went in to order and they had a guy follow me around to mop up the puddles I left. I went outside to eat so that I would not cause the place to flood. Got some dry clothes out of the saddlebags and the rain gear and went into the handicap stall, where there was thankfully a drain in the floor. Changed completely out and put on the rain gear. Took off and the rain stopped within 30 minutes. So it goes....

My 2 Wettest rides:
1) Left Mac's place in Cumberland Furnace after meeting up with T-Bird and friends to ride the Natchez-Trace on our way to GOTF rode right past 3 tornadoes. Arrived in Baton Rouge, LA at 9:30 pm.
2) Left Watkins Glen, NY at 8 am was in Toledo, Oh, 1 hr from home at 4:30 pm. Started pouring rain about 10 mins later. I stopped under an overpass on I75 north along with several people in cages. There was 6 inch of water running down the shoulder where I was sitting on the bike listening to Traffic/weather reports. I75 north was closed 4 miles south of my house because there was 12 feet of water (along with several vehicles) in the road where the hiway passed under I696. The pumps didn't work and the interchange filled up and was closed for over a week. All the low spots heading north were under water. After waiting for the water to recede, which it didn't, I started riding on sidewalks, off road, and over pedestrian bridges to get around the standing water. I finally got home at 11:30 pm. A trip that should have taken 1 hr took 6.5.
The joys of motorcycling! I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'll have to say my favorite rain story happened last year.
I was taking my 7 yr old daughter on her first "big ride" it was 90 mins both ways. We rode down to see my mom and dad and yes we had to take a break heading down cause her butt "was on fire" but hey she was my rider. I prepped her saying we ride in the rain if it happens. Sure enough on the way back we hit a few light rain showers when I asked her if she was OK she replied... "Daddy a good rider can't be bothered by some rain and I am a good rider"
This was also the same trip I hooked up the intercom and blew her mind... She couldn't figure out how she could all.of a sudden hear me inside her helmet.
Anyway she told everyone about her motorcycle ride in the rain... I couldn't be prouder.
