Retired with gov pension and not enough time paid into SS so i  decided to go back to work to get enough time paid into SS so I could draw it. Turned 64 the end of August but did not become eligible till the end of Oct.  Was good easy job  13.35 and between say 36-38 hours a week with no Bennie's. Was let go they say because they are making changes.  What do yous think should I sign up for SS now  or should I collect unemployment till I turn 65 at the end of August an then claim SS ?

Run the employment out and while it's running out go to the S S office get signed up and let them know WHEN YOU want to start receiving your benefits. When I retired got my last regular paycheck and my S S benefits the following month. Oh and as a Veteran signed up for my Veteran benefits-NOT paying for obuminater care as the V A fills THAT need for me for just copays!  Good Fortune on yer retirement!  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

I would check it both ways. It may not make a difference in the SSI to go back to work.  If you can collect the un employment until it runs out . then go for it as you worked for it. Check the dollars and cents.

Thanks guys we'll see , I should be able to draw the unemployment as I been working at this place for just short of 3yrs and not fired just let go. I worked as a courier. All was hush hush but I'm afraid of them that because of buying more places they would have to make me full time and pay Bennie's.

You will only get around 360 range per week tops, if that,  but should be around/over 300 per week in unemployment, depending on how much you made in the biggest quarter working.    300 per week is about 100 bucks per day at your pay range,  so figure getting paid for 3 days of work NOT working with unemployment until the 8K or so runs out which will be months down the road enough to get you buy until SS kicks in.

Biggest issue is I am pretty sure since NOT what I say being 'on call' for the company any longer which would give you a 'work searched waived' status in WI so you don't have to 'search' for a job, but out of work let go you will have to weekly in order to get ANY unemployment benefits do a 'work search'  EVERY week informing the WI unemployment office of I think either 2 or was it 4 places you submitted for employment for a job EACH WEEK has to be done.  Is a PAIN in the butt to do, but has to be done.  If you want to call into the WI unemployment office,  there is certain day each week you ONLY can call in based upon your ssn# (M-W) but anyone can call in on Thursday and I think on Friday as well, just be prepared to be put on hold for 20-30 minutes until you get a LIVE person to talk to.   Best to give it a shot using the ONLINE website with WI unemployment office although is sort of confusing.

I know the WI unemployment office is changing their rules or has changed their rules recently making it harder and harder to collect unemployment since am sure they don't want to pay out anymore than they have to.

Good luck either way and ENJOY retirement.  If I was pushing 65 and let go of a company,  I too would want to get ss and not work or work for a job with less headache I would enjoy more so.

You can apply for SS anytime during the year you become eligible. I became eligible in the month of April but applied in January(not this year....78 in April). I looked at what I'd draw if I took it right away and compared that to what I'd lose by drawing it three months early. Turned out to be only about $25/mo. lost by taking it 3 mo. early, but I drew full benefit during those 3 mo....minus the $25. For that 3 mo. it was quite a few thousand on the positive side and only a $75 loss on the negative side so I took it right away. Granted, I'll be shorted that $25/mo. for the rest of my days. If I live to age 85, it will have cost me $6000, but weighed against what I drew for those 3 mo. early there's less than $1000 difference. It pays to look at all the options.  cooldude

Since the penalty for earning too much while on SS was done away with under Clinton, I drew full SS for over a year before retiring at age 66. It helped kick the SS up a bit while I was at it and I drew full pay on the job and full SS at the same time. Nice chunk of change for 15 months.  Grin

Like your way of thinking John.  And Cookiedough thanks, I never went through this but signed up for unemployment Fri morning. was out of work Thur. Fri. an found out I could submit 4 places I contacted for work and  could it for my 1st wk. With no pay. So t ran up to the vocational school job center location an got some help to sign up on line , kind of a rush thing because I didn't know what to expect. Not much for jobs but I managed to get 4 submitted online so now all I have to do is call in this coming week. Having to look up 4 places isn't easy if there isn't nothing there to look at but it's nice to have a resume on line and with jobs on line it's just a click of a button an the resume is submitted for employment and also sent to the State for proof of job search. Got a little pamphlet from a friend an it says the formula you said so I should get 330-360 a wk. Which would be nice. I can handle that. Ha ha.

good luck Greg,  300-350 per week is not much compared to near 450-500 per week you were making, but by the time you figure in the headaches of working and gas money, etc.,  is enough to make a go of it until SS kicks in am sure.

Just have to keep submitting each week 4 job searches which is a pain, but can be done in most weeks even if the jobs you submitted are not even close to what you are qualified for nor want to do.

Enjoy full retirement very soon!  cooldude
