Computer guys I need help

I don't use the touch pad on my HP laptop. I use a mouse.

If I touch it the font size and correspondingly the page size will increase or decrease.

I've found out how to disable the touch pad BUT every time I restart the laptop I have to go thru the same disable process.

Is there a way to PERMANENTLY disable the bloody touch pad.

There might be an option in the BIOS or system setup to disabled it. Reboot the computer and on the first splash screen (BEFORE Windows starts loading) look for something like "Press F2 to enter setup" or F10, or something, do that, and poke around looking in there.

Disclaimer - Don't change anything in the BIOS settings you're not sure about or "Bad Things" can happen.

Is it the mouse scroll wheel or moving the mouse? CTRL key and scroll at the same time will change what you describe. If so look for a stuck ctrl key.

Look in your control panel and/or application listing for something about "Synaptics Touch Pad" or something like that. You should be able to at least disabled the multi finger gesturing (I.E. The zooming crap) and such with that app... hopefully... maybe...

My laptop has a button at the top center of the pad. This disables the touchpad turns it on and off. It is imbedded in the frame of the pad and if you don't know what it is would mistake it as just part of the frame. Check your pad closely. My laptop is an HP. Some times you can't see the forest for the trees

Nope it's the touch pad.

If I accidentally stroke it whilst typing the font/page size decrease/increases.

Take it to a guy who will load a form of Linux and forget about Windows. And viruses. It will do ANYTHING that Windows will do without all the Windows quirks. Even makes your old computer faster.

Yep I've done that but the pad comes alive every time the laptop is turned on. It's not a permanent disable.

I can understand why so if you forget a mouse or it breaks you can still use the laptop.

Haven't been able to find exactly what the BIOS setup looks like, but to get to it, power on and immediately start hitting the ESC key until the screen changes to a "Startup Menu", things like F1 System Information, F2 System Diagnostics, etc...
We want F10 BIOS Setup

Look around in there for anything about disabling the built in touchpad. But as I said earlier, be very careful, don't make any OTHER changes in here, it could do Bad Things.

I searched as much as I could and wasn't able to see that setting in the BIOS for this system, but since I don't have one actually in front of me it's worth a look see to double check if the option is there or not.

And if none of that works, and you REALLY want it gone, you could follow this guy's video guide for opening one up (The guide is actually to replace the hard drive, but it'll guide you into the guts) and find the ribbon cable(s) going to the touchpad and simply unplug it.

I had the same problem and hated losing my info while typing.  Well after 9 months I have finally found how to disable.  Hope this helps you......Go to your control panel,  click on Hardware and Sound.   Once there, under Device and Printers, click on Mouse.  A small box (Mouse Properties) will open up.  Click on the "ClickPad Settings Tab". Once there you will click on "ClickPad Disable".  A small box will open up letting you know that you are about to disable the only active Synaptics pointing device, just click OK. You will then want to click apply, then OK.  Voila!  That should take care of it.  If you ever need to enable it just follow the above steps and enable the clickpad.  For some reason HP has called the Touchpad, "ClickPad.

I had the problem of the pinch zoom feature automatically defaulting back to active, no matter how many times I unchecked the box. I called HP and they fixed it.

*you MAY have to use a mouse via USB cord after uninstalling the touchpad.

1. Go to settings, devices, mouse & touchpad, additional mouse options, device settings, settings, and uncheck the boxes for pinch zoom in control panel. I unchecked multifinger gestures all together.
2. Uninstall the Synaptics TouchPad driver. Go to settings, connected devices, device manager, mice and other. Right click to uninstall.
3. Restart computer after uninstalling
4. Open HP Recovery Manager
5. Click re-install drivers
6. Scroll to find Synaptics TouchPad driver
7. Install program
8. Restart computer
9. Go uncheck the boxes again from step 1.
10. It should stay unchecked from now on.

Thanks. I'm using a wireless mouse so I'm hesitant to do this.

I'm going to get everything set the way I like the various web pages I use the most to look. Then I'm going low tech with the duct tape.
