Bought one last week for work. Yes, EMS work. Seems to get more dangerous as time goes on. The dept was going to buy them, and they still may if the funds are there, but I went and got one for myself. My partner already had one from his previous EMS job. Opiate drug use is way up in our county. We had more opiate overdoses last yr then 3 other counties combined. We get threatened alot in this job. Was belly to belly with a big biker a month ago. Took all I could not to go hands on.  Grin Thats what cops are for you say. Yes and no. We all know they cant be around all the time. Being a rural service it can take 15 min for them to get to us. Only gonna wear it on certain runs or areas of town. Fits nice and is rather comfy.

Luckily we dont have gangs here. The county over which is huge and does have a problem. They shot up a ambulance a few yrs ago hauling someone they initially shot at.

Been reading for yrs of FF getting shot. Happens every month. Thts why I carry on fire runs, whether its medical or fire in nature.

Good idea Fudge.   cooldude

Mine is pretty heavy and can be murder in the heat (they sell special Tshirts to go under them).  I don't wear one daily, it's just for special occasions.   Evil

My wife has worn one for 15 years (custom made to fit her chest).  She's tiny and it makes her look like a body builder.  When I call her Arnold, she doesn't think its funny.  I do.

I think the key is to not turn your back on people.  If one is kneeled down working on someone, the partner should watch the back.

sad state of this country when EMS and fire dept. have to wear bullet proof vests for their own safety doing their jobs.

Do you get to pack a sidearm as well concealed carry and all?

I would surely hope so.

I have to second Serk's response, there aint no such thing as bulletproof.
Pistol proof, yeah,  AK47, AR15's  etc, No.

As far as I know, our responders in New Haven do not wear threat level two vests and no need for them, even though we are next to Ft. Wayne.  I'll ask the Fire chief next time at the Board of Works and Safety meeting.  New Haven furnishes them to the LEO's but not firemen or Paramedics.

TRAA wears them, that's where my partner got his.

Yup our backs always towards the door/egress.

Mines a IIIA and fairly light. 4 lbs maybe.

Here's a little IIIA demonstration (it's what I have too).  It's pretty impressive at stopping handgun/shotgun rounds, but take a look at the clay dents.  Even with no penetration, that's got to leave a mark.  I also think in your line, the protection from knives cannot be underestimated.

I still wear mine. The fire service is in the same boat. Why these idiots are shooting at EMS or fire departments is beyond me.  tickedoff    Seems to be more so now than ever. I would figure (if there isn't already?) that there will be kevlar in fire fighting gear before long. Crap is already too hot and heavy but beats the alternative.

I can most certainly see a need for Three Rivers to wear them, Brian.  Again, I'll talk to the fire chief, might be a good idea here too.

Yup a big 'crime' diff between FW & NH.
The thing would be money. Far more EMS & FF then there are cops. I can see some folks going to get there own if they want. I know a couple NH EMS guys. I'll have to ask them too.

My cousin Dan in S. Carolina was shot 3 times in his chest. The vest he had on at the time stopped all 3 .357 rounds. He said it "hurt like hell" and his entire chest was black n blue. But, better than the final sleep.

Oh, he double tapped the guy that shot him. He didn't have a vest on.    cooldude

'Been retired for 5 years now. (Fire-Rescue-EMS) Only a few incidents that we were assaulted. No firearms involved. We're pretty fortunate, LEO's were usually on the scene as we would pull up. I'm now 61 years young and not in as good of shape as when I was on the job. I'm not sure I could still handle getting my a** kicked like when I was young! Kinda glad I'm retired,  but still miss the job and the guys.
