Anyone here know Peter Bolen from Knoxville ?

He was killed yesterday after hitting a guardrail less than two miles from my house on Old Emory Rd near Bull Run Steam Plant. He rode a yellow Suzuki sport bike . I looked him up on FB he has a www.us129photo.com on his homepage. My friend called me to make sure it wasn't me after hearing on the scanner a rider was killed and it was so close to my home. I jumped in the car and drove to the site hoping it wasn't one of my riding buds they was still dealing with the rider and had the road blocked in both directions. Only thing the guy standing in the road would tell me was it was a yellow sport bike .

A fatal accident report said Bolen had been drinking.

Joe, you always work hard to find motels to stay in where we can walk to supper...

Thanks!

I let Foster's crash last Oct. lay heavy on me and we all know he was NOT drinking . I just couldn't stop thinking " if " I hadn't turned down that old country backroad he would not be in ICU and near death.... As for finding a motel close to " walking distance " a place folks can have a decent meal and a cold beer if they choose without getting on a motorcycle is a priority when I'm planning a ride. Just like some folks will read about the guy in this post and think he had it coming for drinking and riding ... I never want anyone to say that about one of my friends.

While I suppose it really doesn't matter, a rider is dead, I hate reading that.    Playing stupid games and winning stupid games is obviously really stupid.

My condolences to his family, close friends and the entire biking world.   If, the above quote is true, it was an un-necessary loss.    Just no reason to do such a thing.

Joe, I could tell Foster's accident had a profound effect on you, but I hope you realize that when something is going to happen, it happens.  I wasn't actually there, but from what I have been told, you did nothing that would have contributed to Fosters accident or the extent of his injuries.  I'm just glad he is well on the way to recovering.  Have you heard lately how he is doing?

He is doing much better and getting stronger by the day. His wife Anne posted a picture the other day on Facebook and said he had drove his pick-up for the first time since his crash.... Thanks for the words Joe I appreciate that  cooldude

I just couldn't stop thinking " if "

"if" you hadn't passed up that turn you could have easily made
that time, I might have tried to make it...

"if" you hadn't drilled "ride your own ride" into my head, I might
have gone faster than I should have any number of times...

"if" Britman didn't say "it's not a race", I might have forgotten
that it's not a race...

It is our love, it is our passion. Each and everyone of us knows in the back of our mind when we swing our leg over the risk.

I too have had accidents that happened during rides I led weigh heavily on my mind.

I no longer lead rides for those I don't know. And am hesitant to lead ride

That's why I stopped doing the Memorial Day weekend ride.

One wreck on Alt 226A Little Switzerland so closely nearly took a mans life.

To hear him tell me he was laying on his back on the down slope of the mountain watching an airborne H-D skim his chest so closely he could feel it sent long slices of ice into my mortal being.

AND if you DO NOT accept that risk AND if that's NOT in the back of your mind you might revaluate your position on riding. I KNOW with out a doubt I may not come home from any ride I embark on. And I'm still NOT ready to give it up. RIDE SAFE.

Sad, sad, sad........what else can we think and feel?

Bikers are killed here so regularly that I can't keep track.  Way too much traffic, crazy or lost riders and drivers.

Most bikers killed here are not wearing helmets.

I ride alone and stay away from the tourist areas as much as possible.

It's a challenge just to keep my safety distance from vehicles in front of me because some one always passes me on the right and cuts in front of me.

Can't wait to retire and get out of here.

God Speed those who have met with these deadly wrecks.

Joe +1   cooldude on what Mike said he hit the nail right on the head, remember what I said way back when Foster had his accident? I said its a dangerous sport we do and things will happen that we cannot control, we make a choice to ride.
We all make a choice to get on the bikes and ride, knowing full well that anything can happen at any time, you my dear friend cannot control what will happen to others weather your leading, following or not even along for the ride, you can only control (and that only partially) what you and your surroundings are doing, what your bike is doing, not what I am doing or not doing, where I am looking or not looking.
We all must ride our own ride and sometimes that ride just does not work out the way we planned, no matter who leads the ride and what road you ride on.
Do not let the guilt of something you cannot control take a hold of you, just be yourself Joe, you are one of the best riders I have ever had the honor to share the wind with.

Haven't posted much lately, but this thread gives me pause...

BikerGirl and I started riding later in life, and we have thoroughly enjoyed our many miles on two wheels traveling all over this great country.  It is a pursuit that we mostly enjoy together - as a solo couple.  The last several Inzanes have been fun, great experiences where we've made many new friends.  We're hoping to take another long trip this summer into New England - hopefully safely completing our 48 contiguous states map.

We can't help but feel the anxiety each time we read of these tragic events.  The Good Lord has kept us safe in our travels to this point.  We seldom participate in group rides except for those at Inzane and a few charity rides here close to home.  Like many here have said we choose to ride our own ride and not exceed our skill level.  I am envious of the skills of those who can safely ride in a more "energetic" fashion, but recognize that I am not one of them and ride accordingly.

As motorcycle riders we knowingly participate in an endeavor that has numerous risks.  Point is we choose to participate - and no one is twisting our arm to do it either in a certain way or at all.  To this point in our lives we enjoy the experience enough to continue, and we pray for our own safety and that of our friends/fellow riders down the road.

Our thoughts are certainly with those who have fallen, and with their loved ones.

Ride safely, everyone...

I no longer ride. I quit mainly because my knees couldn't always be trusted to hold the bike up at stops.  I knew that I was never down , no accidents of any kind since 1947. I wondered about the odds.  That preyed on my mind.  I also knew that, at 87 years old, ANY type of accident would be serious for me.

I looked back at a gentler time when there was less traffic AND people drove their cars with responsibility.  Not any more. No matter how safe you ride, you cannot account for the inept, idiotic, part timer drivers  texting and doing other distracting things.

I surely miss riding and, if I were only to ride with the great riders here I would still be doing it.  Unfortunately, as you know, it's the drivers that cause the problems............., except if you are dumb enough to ride while drinking!

I feel right at home in the Miata as these idiotic bastards ignore it too.  I guess they think that it's too small to do them damage ,what with their pickups and such.

I have had those moments when throwing my leg over the saddle I wonder if some moron will pull in front of me or hit me from behind, Will this be the ride where I look down and don't look up quick enough.  Plenty of close calls in my 50 years in the  saddle. Down on dirt and track never on the street. Plenty of close calls (Thank you Lord).

RIP to the rider. No one deserves to die because of a bad decision. Pray for the families and loved ones affected. Damn shame .... Just a shame

Joe,
It cant be easy to walk up to some one you met the day before and tell them to "ride your ride", after they did something stupid.  But you did for me.  So +1 from me too.
