Why would anyone shave a cow like that?

Broussard, Louisiana

Settling in and starting to dig it.  What I have learned is that being home with Bonnie every day now, let's just say that threading pipe by hand and laying pipeline and building fire retaining levees with a shovel when I was 18 years old was easier work than retirement so far!!!   Cheesy

I never realized that the "honey do" list had grown so large after all these years of working in Africa.  Wow!  But I have to admit, the yard never looked as good this early in the year.

And we never had a garden before......well, we do now and I sure am glad that I finished toting those 80 bags of dirt....  Grin  Also know that the garage has never been more cleaned and organized either........

Plus the 4 fur children sure have dug having me around ALL the time now.

Well, after a month or so of "need to unionize" work for a loving, but unrelenting, task master, it was time to feel a little bit of wind to maintain my sanity.  Two wheels move the soul.  So, took off for a couple of hours - no destination - just riding whichever way the bike moved me.

Wound up going down Bayou Tortue road with the Spanish moss covered oaks along the road.

Then over to St Martinsville and the Evangeline Oak.

Over to Oak and Pine Alley and since I was on the Wee, road it back and forth a couple of times.

Went through Coteau Holmes - and stopped by the curve that Bruce (DDT) had the U-Joint (I think) go out on him when he showed up one time on his gypsy journeys a couple of years ago.  The great thing was that we got to spend a couple of extra days with my dear, dear friend while the Honda stealer repaired his magic carpet....come to think of it, it may have been the alternator....

Went down to the Henderson levee road and rode up to Red's. This was in the movie The Apostle with Robert Duval.  When he was talking to a guy coming out of a bar/bus stop - this was it.  I think Ms Mary has passed away now.........

Continued on the levee road enjoying the day and went across the pontoon bridge to Butte La Rose.  This bridge was in the Apostle as well.  When Robert Duval drove his car into a river (supposed to be in Texas) and climbed out - this was the bridge he climbed out on.  We were living out there at the time and they shut the bridge down for a day while they filmed that scene.

Went by our old house in Butte La Rose (Red Butte) where Bonnie and I lived for about 12 years or so and then down to the Atchafalaya River - which was high due to the rain water coming down from North Louisiana and Texas.

Then road around the area for awhile and back through St Martinsville.....man, it sure felt AWESOME to get some wind, no matter how short.  Got about 80 miles in - sweet miles no matter how short.

Got home and removed the ATV pad off the saddle - didn't add much comfort and spray painted the cap on the PVC tool carrier on the Wee and yesterday Bonnie took a nap (tired of pointing to what she wants done I think - that can be tiring)  Smiley so got back into the wind again.

Rode down to Spanish Lake and planned on riding the gravel road around it - but stopped at the visitor center and the rude lady said that NO motorcycles were allowed.  Hmmm, so took off just checking out roads.  Found a couple of nice ones.

Eventually wound up at Jefferson Island.

Weather was AWESOME and scenery was nice and there were 4 peacocks out (screaming like peacocks do).........

Eventually worked my way back to casa (got another 60 or so miles in) and laid grass seed.  Another thing I have learned about retirement is that I used to talk about radioactive responses to formational fluids and fluid mobility and now I speak to neighbors about things like will the garden weasel loosen back yard dirt and is Bermuda a summer grass.....Oh well, I guess I prefer talking about garden weasels.  uglystupid2

So, things I have learned in the last month - AARP is great to have if you are starting insurance programs, retirement is hard work, pressure washing your house will take twice as long as you think, wind sure feels good and yes, a garden weasel will loosen back yard soil!  cooldude

Well, back to work..............HEY, I THINK THERE IS A BBQ AND A GATHERING OF SOME FOOLS IN A WEEK!  WHOOOOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!  This fool sure is ready!!!!!!!!

I retired in January this year, now I am nursing a broken leg!! So I think your doin good even with your chores. I will miss the Fool's. By the way, wish I could ride 80 miles and have all that beautiful scenery to gander at! Down here at the end of the world it's all flat and mostly conjested. I have to ride north about 200 miles to find pretty. Enjoyed the photos. Be careful, it happens quick.

I've been retired since November of '09. Sold the house, bought a small condo. Lock the door and we're off like a prom dress! Best darn job I've EVER had. If their is any thing left for the kids, it is simply a miscalculation on our part!

Great ride report and pics, thanks for sharing em.  cooldude

That was all the nudge I needed to stop work for a while, grab a bite and get in the wind.

Many thanks for reminding me there is more to life than work. I can work in the shop after dark. For now, I think it's time for fun.  cooldude

Thanks for the ride-along.  Is that green grass and flowers I'm seeing?  I'd forgotten what they looked like!

Beautiful country you live in there, Strider.   cooldude

Me too! Wonderful memories made with Strider going to all of those places... I'm glad to see Warren finding the silver lining to the clouds that recently popped up... Things always work out in the end... If they don't seem to be working out, it just means it's not the end yet... Looking forward to GOTF, and to a reunion with my dear old friend...

I for one am not really loving it.  By Kansas law, paid firefighters are forced to retire at age 60 unless they are fire chief.  I gotta say I would have liked to stay, but I knew I did not want to deal with the politics in that position, so I'm making the best of it by traveling and  riding a lot, and having fun with my seven grandkids. At least the pension is adequate, and I've been feeding from the public trough for nine years.  cooldude   Hoser

shoot, the way things are going in this economy/expenses,  I doubt there will be retirement in my future having to attempt to work until age 70 (or more if make it much past that?)....   Cry

Your house both front and back look very nice and green, well taken care of for sure.

Enjoy retirement, sounds like you will be kept busy for sure, for at least awhile longer.

Never had a bad ride in south Louisiana, probably some of the most under rated riding in the country.  Now after seeing this Ill have to do a Saturday morning run to Mamou to Freds Lounge for a little partying.

Nice ride report Warren.  I have been retired for 3 yrs 3 months and that list is getting a little shorter but I can't see the bottom yet. Smiley  Honestly I am just glad that we both "made it".

that last statement surely holds true.  Just about 2 months ago a guy near age 65 at work with over 35 years in with the same company just shy of 2 months before he was going to retire, dies of a massive heart attack and thought he was in darn good shape overall.  A huge shock for sure never saw it coming.

Enjoy the retirement years!!!   cooldude
