I always thought panthers were black, cougars and mountain lions and pumas were tan. Maybe there are black and tan panthers. And arent all these cats the same species but the area you're in determines what name they go by? Sorry im not well versed in big cats.

I think what is called a Florida panther is much more like an American mountain Lion without getting all Wikipedia............
OK couldn't help my self I Wikipedia ed it, subspecies of Cougar aka Mountain Lion

There are some in the Hualapai mountains near where you moving to. There was one killed on the 40 by Needles a few years back, but they seldom come out of the mountains down here in the desert. We had a black bear come down out of the mountains down here to the lake a few years back. Caused quite a stir, a lot of these desert people are only familiar with reptiles and coyotes.  |

We live only about 5 miles form Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary where that video was taken. There are a lot of big cats down here since the government brought in Texas cats to bred with the Florida cats in an effort to increase the population. They collared the Texas cats when they arrived then recaptured them after about 12 years and sent them back to Texas. Now we have more cats than we know what to do with and the hog population has almost vanished in some areas. If you have a small farm with goats, chickens or a dog on the loose they may vanish too. The most common "Black Panther" is actually a Leopard with dark hair (or Jaguar in the US). Look close enough and you can see the spots in the dark coat. Of course, I suggest a zoo instead of in the wild... In the end, they are pretty much all the same cat... just slight differences in size & color depending on what continent you are located when you spot one. |

We had one of the fl panthers hit by a car 800 ft from my house last year, he was headed north so he had to pass right by my place. Makes me take a second look when I hear some thing at night. Don't care to meet one of them up close and personal. I think I would have jumped off that boardwalk and let him have all of it.
