Taking the month of July off this summer and riding to Alaska. I am working on a route now and will post it when done. Anyone along the way to visit would be great and any advice on the route would be great also. So far just me and one other buddy going and anyone else wants to join up would be great.   This will be another one off my bucket list.

I'm headed from SW Ohio to Seattle sometime in July.  Are you doing a straight run or a multi-state meander?  I am planning on quite a zig-zag route covering a lot of territory.

There are at least a couple of us in southern Alberta that would be happy to make route suggestions and/or meet up with you and/or provide a bed for a night.

Right now the plan is to head out of IN west to route 20 in IL then across Iowa on rt 20 thru SD and go north to Canada either in Mt or ND.
Would def love to meet some Canadian brothers and share some wind,, thanks for the offers and I will contact you as the plans get closer.

What would suggestions be as to where to go north and what route?

I would suggest crossing further west . Lake Okanagan is a good place. Where you are considering is still mostly prairie .

Thats good info,, thanks,, I kinda knew it was prairie. I used to go fishing like 10 times up at The Pas Manitoba,, and know that southern Manitoba was all prairie,, North was nice. Further west it will be.

Actually want to go up a different route than coming back

Be careful, planning month long trips to Alaska can get women pregnant... That happened to me!

Enjoy the trip, and I'm jealous, that trip is still VERY near the top of my bucket list...

What would suggestions be as to where to go north and what route?

If you love straight highways and prairie scenery, by all means go through North Dakota and Saskatchewan.  Having driven thousands and thousands of miles visiting relatives in Saskatchewan my whole life, I've built up somewhat of an immunity to the charms of wheat, barley, and canola fields, and endless skies of small, white, puffy clouds.  There's more to it than that, but not much more.  I have heard that Hwy 2 through northern Montana is scenic, but have never tried it.

I would suggest travelling through the southern half of South Dakota, then either plan on some stunning riding through the Bighorn National Forest (Hwy 14 and Alt. 14 west of Ranchester, WY are stunning), followed by the Beartooth Pass (Hwy 212 SW of Red Lodge, MT), or take the 212 NW of Belle Fourche, SD to make time (the section between Broadus, MT and the Little Bighorn Battlefield is beautiful), then pick your way to head west and north. Some stunning stretches of highway in that vicinity:

I90 west of Livingston.
I15 north of Helena most of the way to Great Falls.
Hwy 89 north of White Sulphur Springs through Lewis & Clark National Forest.
Hwy 287 north of I15 near Wolf Creek to Choteau is lonely and beautiful.  I left that highway towards Conrad, but continuing on 89 north of Choteau towards Browning looks like it might be worth exploring.
Going-To-The-Sun Rd (Logan Pass) in Glacier National Park is one of those rides worth making a detour for, even (or especially) if you go from East Glacier to West Glacier, then back again.
Hwy 213 from Cut Bank to the Del Bonita, AB border crossing is nice.

The farther west you cross the border into Alberta, the more scenic it will be, but the Coutts/Sweet Grass crossing is the most direct.  Coutts is also the most likely to have a delay at the border.  I prefer to cross at Del Bonita or Chief Mountain.  Heading north towards Calgary, Hwy 2 is fast, but Hwy 22 is beautiful (and often busy).  Hwys 23, then 24 is also nice, being lightly-traveled and rolling prairie scenic.  If taking Hwy 22, at the junction of Hwys 22 & 533, you can't go wrong either continuing north on 22 or heading east on 533 to Nanton.  533 is one of my favourites.  If you have time, Hwy 40 between Hwy 22 and Hwy 1 is stunning.  Hwy 93 between Lake Louise and Jasper should be one of your reasons for taking this trip.

Great info,, i have been west through the bighorns and up through Montana to CoeurD'alene and Spokane to Seattle,, so diff route is in order. I would not even take this trip without hwy 93 and Jasper and Banff. Diff route up than home is preferred also.

The only time you would be tempted to plug in is in the mountains in the early morning, but otherwise no.

Keep an eye on your tires. Roads there tend to eat em. I made the trek from Michigan a few years back and my tires took a beating in Alaska.  For the heck of it locate shops along your travel route in case you run into difficulties and write down where they are. FWIW

If going through western or central BC, let me know, maybe can hook up. Also once you decide on a route, I can offer some suggestions for places you should see either on the way up or down. Rockies, Selkirk mountains, BC Kootenays or Okanogan are all great riding  and scenery.
