Was reading the 'Never Saw It Coming' thread. A few guys were saying that
after seeing that video, they'll be keeping it gear from now on when stopping
at a light.

Whenever I stop at a light, I'm always in first, clutch pulled in, watching for
the clown who isn't gonna stop.

So, under what circumstance would you put it in neutral at a stop?

Not trying to be a wise ass, just asking.

Keep mine in gear and make sure there is enough room to get around vehicle in front of me if any. Whether that be stopping short of said vehicle or at an angle. The guy in the vid had zero chance in gear or not happened way too fast.

I very seldom put it in neutral unless I need my left hand for something else for a few seconds.

same here as well as if sitting at a long, time consuming light in stopped traffic not going to move for 1 minute or more.  Just seems like more work to put out of neutral if at a short stop light than it is worth.

The only time I'm in "N" is if I need to stretch out, make "adjustments" with my jeans, my jacket or helmet, but my eyes are constantly scanning everywhere and everything especially the mirrors.

Being the first in line is more nerve racking than being surrounded by completely stopped vehicles.

In gear. If I need to move now, I don't want to take the time to shift.

Neutral is for rolling the bike around in the garage.  cooldude

I am strongly in agreement with these two statements.  I used to now and then shift into neutral at a stoplight but after some discussion on the need to be ready to move if required to I stopped that practice.

I always wear a full helmet so when I stop it gets fogged up easily. I needed a free hand to open the visor adjust my glasses scratch my nose and so on. I used to leave the bike in neutral even as I was rolling to a stop I'd downshift from second to neutral and drop into first when I took off. Last Sept I was in a pretty bad wreck. Similar to the video in that thread. I've only rode a thousand miles or so since then but you bet your ass I'm looking in the mirror now while slipping the clutch. the whole time I'm stopped. I have gotten in the habit of cracking my visor open before I stop now too.

I rarely am in neutral when at a stop.

Occasionally, if I'm in a line of traffic that isn't moving and there are two or three cars already stopped behind me (a buffer zone of sorts), and I know I'll be there a few minutes... then I may bump it to neutral.  But that's about it.

I usually also keep my right foot on the brake lever at stops... unless the wife is with me.  If she's back there, I keep both feet on the ground in case she decides to move around and throw me off balance.

I ALWAYS leave myself an escape route even if I have to leave more room in front of me .  And in gear also .  I glue my eyeballs to the mirror and  I strobe my brake light by pumping the front brake lever 7 times in fast order with a pause and another 7 pumps to get noticed, it does work.  I stop when I KNOW they see me .

I also am a break pumper until I get a car or two stopped behind me.  I agree that it helps get the attention of others.

Because of this, I tend to leave a bike length between me and the car in front of me,
so that I MIGHT have a chance of slipping to the right.

I also leave a few bike lengths when behind a truck with a (presumed) manual tranny.
If he starts rolling backward, it's sorta the same as getting hit from behind.

Another technique I use in stop and go traffic (where you get up to speed between stops) is this:  Unlike in my car where I tend to run up and stop, as soon as I see a light change up ahead, I release the throttle (saves gas too) and coast, and I take longer slowing and rolling up to the stop, which requires following cars to slow up sooner as well.  This has irritated a few cagers, but screw them; what is the purpose of racing up to a stop light?  (other than another texting opportunity)

I also use the brake lever to flash my brake lights quickly, but not for five minutes.
