Its a small company, have been here 6 years and it was the best company i have ever worked for..
well i have been informed that they are closing shop on most of our clients and will only keep 3.
that does not justify my salary,,not even close,,
today at 9am i have a meeting with the president and I guess I will see then what the future holds in store,,
wish me luck and say a short prayer for me,,,
update to follow in about an hour and a half...

Good luck, Jess. No way to sugarcoat it, that sucks. Are there any other outfits around you that do similar kinds of work?

Best of luck!

Ouch, sorry to hear that, way too much of that going on lately... Every time my messenger app for work dings my heart drops as I fear it's my manager giving me that infamous "tap on the shoulder."

Glad to hear you've got things lined up to land on your feet... Hope we all do!

Kinda the same situation. Only difference is I'm almost 62 and wasn't ready to retire yet. But with the oil field going crazy and people dropping like flies around me. I made a decision to go on short term disability and have my knees replaced before losing insurance. I figured my number was close to being up with my age. I am shooting for long term once the surgery is complete which I can draw 60% of my income till I reach age 65. Good luck and maybe time to enjoy life more.

I was trying to edit a pervious post but deleted it instead. (sigh)

I may have left a false impression with my post. I’ve been cancer fee since 2011. It’s just that that episode took a bit of a bit out of our finances. My wife has ongoing medical issues that seem to sap up any attempt to get our feet under us. Most of her stuff was covered under our old plan, but now the biologics and some tests aren’t. Additionally, we now have a $3,000 per person deductible.

Sorry to hear of it going that way for you, Jess, but having seen you go from the Valk to the HD I already knew your choices in life have not been the best.

Seriously, though, I wish you well in the handyman endeavor.  I hope it works out better than full time employment ever could have.

Use the severance wisely.

My dad started a handy man service 7 years ago after driving a truck his whole adult life. His plan was to only work 5 days a week which has turned into 7 days a week. He stays really busy, more than he wants but does very well with it. The hardest part was starting up and getting a name for himself. He put magnets on his truck and little enclosed trailer and geys tons of calls just driving down the road. Good luck Jess

25K severance is better than nothing and a kick in the butt and say see ya later with nothing.  I'd be somewhat sad at first, but 25K can make it go for a year or longer if done wisely.

Sure hope in that year or less you find something you enjoy the next few years of working before 'officially' retiring.

My wife just found out 'thru the grapevine'  that the entire accounts payable and credit/collections (a/r) are being outsourced to overseas to India with 30-50 employees loosing their jobs.  So much for an American company that once was local,  growing and growing buying companies right and left and becoming now 'international'.    It is not official yet, but a pretty good rumor sounds like it will happen in 2016 sometime.  Luckily, for now anyways,  my wife is in the treasury dept. but was in a/p for the first 8-10 years there .

My company just got bought out in Oct. 2015 and so who knows what will happen there as well the next year or so but apparently is on the upswing vs. what others there prior to me having a 2 year pay freeze the past 2 years.   I have been thru 2 company moves/closings and thought the first job right out of college in 1990 I would be there 'for life' and liked it a lot was good at it as well.  That branch office moved to Milwaukee WI wasn't willing to relocate at the time as well as another job elsewhere was there 2 years closing our office for my particular job and moved our work to 'national corporate headquarters' also wasn't going to relocate wasn't worth it.  So,  I know how jobs throw a monkey wrench in your life which sucks but try not to let it get you down although I have been depressed over some of those changes in my life at times more than I should have.   Only my first job being there 6 years gave me a severance package of 5 months pay, better than nothing I guess?

I guess lucky to have a job for now the way the world spins our lives around?  That is how I feel right about now with all the negative things I see around me daily.

One thing is for certain:  NO job is secure enough to be a lifetime, lifelong job in today's working world.    You could be the best worker in the company and still doesn't matter one bit.

Life is a beach. I had retirement forced on me too. I was somewhat lucky in that when the twin towers were hit and the economy tanked I lost most of my retirement savings but did have enough to last until SS and my pension kicked in.Now have a nice home, no bike  and an older f 150 and an older Buick. They cost a whole $1500 each 3 years ago and look like they will last for some time yet. Some times you have to bite the bullet and settle for a little less. I like having no car payments. Just hang in there and put that $25000 to good use.

Sorry to hear about this indeed.  25k is better than most are going to get.  New recession on the way, heck we are not over the last one, new norm they say.  I would think a handy service is a great idea.  You can get into it with very little capital, I imagine you already have the tools, just need proper vehicle and insurance - get bonded for sure.  I will bet in six months you are going to thank you lucky stars this happened.  People just do not have the skills they once had to do home repairs and the need for this service will only grow.

Just heard on coast to coast am last night on open hour a caller from southern Indiana.  He said the Alcoa plant is closing and moving over seas.    600 jobs to go.  This is after Carrier in Indy announced huge closing and 1500 jobs gone earlier this year or at end of last year.   Caller said he was a lifetime Democrat and is switching to vote for Trump.   That sucking sound that Perot talked about his sucking  big time.

Sorry to hear, it's happened to me a couple of times in my 30's and 40's.  Made it through but there were some tough time.  Glad to hear your getting something out of them in the end.  The sad part is how much of the 25K the government will take so someone can study the mating habits of rabbits.

Hope it turns out as you want, but if not, look at it as a blessing and retire, it will be the best job you ever had. I retired at age 60 (My choice) and have not missed public work at all. I'm  busy all the time now, and don't know how I time for work. I have a small farm. Thru the summer, I mow about 7 acres a week, raise a few chickens, raise a couple pigs, grow a garden. In the fall make sorghum, apple butter, and apple cider, make Maple syrup in the spring. I give 75% of it all away. I even bought a sawmill last fall to piddle around with.
As you can see I haven't quit work, but I don't have to be anywhere, anytime. Get up at 5:00am or noon (Never have yet). Work all day, work an hour, watch TV or play on the computer all day. Take a trip to Texas (had a great time at Mark and Charlene's) or stay home. Take a afternoon ride or a week long ride. DO WHAT YOU LIKE, WHEN YOU LIKE. Enjoy life, it may not last.

Sorry about the job loss, most of us have been there.

Common sense normally comes with experience, both good and bad.    Glad to see you get back on a Valkyrie, I'm quite sure that will be a cost effective and excellent experience........

Jess,

I can only try to imagine the emotional aspects of such a set back. The financial adjustments and re-tooling for hard times are easier for us to grapple with, as most of us have had to deal with those un-pleasantries ourselves. Platitudes and encouraging words can ease the sting, I suppose, but nothing I or anyone can say will change your circumstance... Good luck.

On a brighter note, we're all glad you chose to remain with us during your Harley phase... And, we welcome you back to Valk ownership, if that does occur.

You've always struck me through what I've read of your posts over the years as a level-headed, reasonably intelligent guy, so whatever life has in store for you, I'm sure you will be able to make the most of it... Again, best of luck to you!

Jess, I know situations like this do cause a lot of shock and fear.  Hate to hear that for you.  However, I believe you are a stand up guy and have enough skills to land on your feet and settle in with a new endeavor.   One day down the road, you will probably look back on this as just a bump in the road of life.

Jess, you feel like moving south?

I work for a defense contractor (a pretty big one) on Eglin AFB in the Panhandle of Florida.  We're changing contracts Oct 1.  We're currently InDyne Inc, but they're changing the name to RT&T.

There will be all sorts of jobs coming up, some at our facility, some in my shop.  The contract is supposed to be for another 10 years, so there's some pretty good security there.

They're taking open applications now and will be taking specific job applications for specific jobs at a later date.

I'm 62 and have cancer, so I don't know how much longer I'll be working myself.

If you're interested, I'll post the web site tomorrow night so you can apply.

If anyone else on the board is interested, you're also welcome to apply too.

I was given a choice to retire in 1991 at 62 years of age.   I worked for a great company and they offered a small sum to retire.  I did contract work for awhile longer and then ran for political office.

Times were much better then.   I made two promises to myself. Payoff my only credit card fully each month and never take out a loan.

That has worked for me but does require some adjusting.  When I sold my home to my son and moved into the apartments I didn't like paying rent but it's worked out and I no longer use my limited energy to do the work needed as a homeowner.

Today, we are living in tougher times.  Two of my sons are not working and the third almost lost his job.  My daughter is working in the medical field and so far, so good.  It's hard to out source medical services but ,if there is a way, our government and  heavily taxed companies will find a way, 'nuff said on that.

I wish you well, Jess, and hope that you'll be able to bring in a proper income. until you are ready to retire.
