I was sitting out in the back yard this afternoon and noticed this little guy kept coming back and perching on the same spot.  He'd stay for a couple of minutes, make his rounds and come back, over and over agian.  So while he was gone, I set up the camera and tripod and waited.

RP, I feed the hummers every summer here, for years.  I'm sure I get returning birds, each early spring.  I hang my feeders under the roof overhangs, out of the sun, and so I can watch them.  If you sit long enough you discover each bird finds a particular spot and always returns to it to perch (all summer)..... when they are not playing aerial combat with each other.  If I go out and water the scape, and use a fine mist, I can get a number of them bathing in flight, in the mist.  If I let a feeder go empty, they hover in the window and look inside, wistfully.

All I get are Ruby Throats, I think yours is another variety.  Nice shot.

Really neat shot, love the detail. A few years back I was visiting friends in Mich., they have a couple of Hummer feeders on posts around their backyard porch. While we were eating dinner on the porch, the Hummers would come/go just a few feet away, suddenly one came and hovered over my Kool-aid drink and took a sip. It was bright red and sweet....probably the color caught their eye at first. It wasn't more than a foot from me and showed no fear. Needless to say, I was intrigued by it all.

Great Shot!!!

Thanks guys.  I'd like to say it's skill, but if I get a good one, its usually luck.  I'm still figuring the camera out.  I used to have a 35mm SLR back in the 70's, but only point and shoots since then.  A couple of months ago I was thinking I always wanted a good camera, so I went and got one.  Its a Nikon D7200.  It has way more capability than I do.  All I can say is its amazing what you can do with a 200mm lens from about 10 feet.

Great pic, RP!

Gotta love hummingbirds. They're the smallest bird but also the most fearless. I put out 4 feeders, resting material, and now have constructed my own water park for them.

It's constructed out of a galvanized oil drip pan--$10, a 220 gph pump-$8, a 5 gal bucket, a piece of 1/2 inch pvc, some 1/2 ID hose a 90 degree barbed hose fitting and some aquarium odds and ends.

Now all I need are some hummingbirds. They're not quite up to the Northern Illinois area yet.

You can check out the test run.

On the East coast, the only hummers are ruby throated. Out west there many varieties.

I was aware of that Sandy.

I truly enjoy these wonders of nature.

They always make me think of James Brown's standard intro.... the hardest working man in show business.    Smiley
