Hmmm.  I don't think either rider had to go down in this situation, especially the second rider.  Maybe some overreaction from both.

You can see that the second guy saw that semi coming up fast, prolly crapped and peed his pants, and was busting some moves to avoid becoming a grill emblem!  Looks like his knee was about to snap from the backpedaling.

Sure beats the alternative.

EDIT: On closer look, that first guy was pretty much screwed.  That dog was moving!

Another angle of the guy hitting the dog, with some background info from another guy on the ride.  Some (justifiable) language in this clip.  Start watching at about 6 minutes if you just want to see the impact.

That semi sure smoked 'em up trying to avoid that guy!  Could have been much uglier!

I am nursing a broken leg for the last four and a half weeks for missing a dog in a curve. It happens very fast. I hope to be a little more cautious than I thought I was, I don't want to spend my time like this again, you guys ride safe!

Have hit two dogs in my lifetime of riding, one I hit with my peg and the other with the front tire. The one I hit with my front tire nearly took me down. If the dog is moving and you hit him it has a tendency to roll the front end. Pretty scary stuff.

About the only thing I see that could have been done differently is, the rider who hit the dog should have gotten off the brakes just before hitting it.  The dog would have gone under the bike or been split in two rather than cause the bike and rider to somersault.  That rider was also too close to the bike in the right tire track in front of him (camera bike in the 7 min video).  If he was back a little more he could have used the full lane to swerve and avoid.  The rider that crashed behind him was riding on the centre line; I think that if he were completely in his lane on unpainted pavement, his front tire wouldn't have washed out on him.  He did have pretty good initial traction, however, as it was enough to raise the back tire off of the ground before the front tire slid.  I am glad he didn't end up under the truck!

Trust me we I tell you that stopping a bob tail tractor-no trailer-is difficult under the best of circumstances. The brakes on that tractor are deigned to stop a FULLY loaded unit. It-the tractor-appeared to maintain a straight line. The faults of the "riders" have already been pointed out. That following to closely thingy will git every time. RIDE SAFE.
