Hello again I am trying to get my new bike dialed in and had a couple questions. 1) When I picked it up the left pipe was clean. When I got home (200 miles) I noticed the black residue you see in the picture. It looks like melted plastic or rubber. What do you guys think it is? 2)I changed the oil and had to use a harbor freight oil filter tool to re-tighten the 3/4-1 turn past seated that I read as recommended. The teeth chipped some of the black off the new Honda filter. Any advice on a better method? 3) The chrome is wrinkled on the plastic side cover with Honda label. Was is this piece called and what are the options for replacement? 4) The middle "intake circle" is concave while the others feel flat or slightly rounded. Is this a problem? Thanks again for helping get my new bike and dialing it in, Matt

Well something has definitely melted on the pipes you can get it off but it will take some work. The Alternator cover is what is wrinkled they are waaaaaaaay high in price. The dent in the carb cover won't be a problem other than looks.

Thanks
So I just need to hand tighten as tight as I can and good to go? Even if didn't spin 3/4-1 rotations?
Any idea where the black came from on the pipe? It looks like a clear line of demarcation from the seam back. Is there a gasket or anythin in there that could have melted out?
Thanks again guys.

Because from the seam forward is simply a heat shield.....You can almost put your hand on it.....From the seam back is the absolute hottest spot on the bike. It's where all 3 exhausts come together. Don't touch there.....you'll be missing some skin.

It's your boot. Just sit on the bike and flip up the sidestand, you'll see where your boot hits the pipe when you go to put it down. Get some of the stuff my wife said was named after me....Goof Off. Don't do this when the pipes are hot, put some on a rag and it will rub off.

Looks like my filter was the victim of my ongoing ham fisted inclination to over tighten.
Should i back it out and retighten? I wondered if my brutish tightening might mess with the shape of the filter.
The boot makes sense. Gotta watch that from now on.

I put my filters on hand tight then with a filter wrench just a snug more. Make sure the gasket from the old filter comes off with it. Dont want 2 gaskets in there. I also always rub new oil around the new filter gasket to keep it from sticking and gives a better seal I suppose.

What he said. Hand tight (lubed) is good enough. The extra quarter turn is just for peace of mind.

Never Dull (wadding - comes in a tin) works great for removing melted plastic/rubber from the pipes, and doesn't damage the chrome.

Another explanation for the black on your pipe might be exhaust leakage. Under the pipe at that point is a small drain hole for moisture to vacate the pipe if it builds up in the pipe. If your carbs are set too rich, the excess carbon might be building up. It'll come right off.

Regarding the marks on the left pipe. I kept finding a similar situation on an Interstate I had. Turned out that when I was feeling for the kickstand stub with my shoe, the heel was rubbing and melting onto that spot. I just had to LOOK and direct my kickstand manipulation more carefully, to avoid future cleanups. Hope this helps. Mike in New York

Waaay over tightening the oil filter. 1/4 turn after seating the gasket,,,,,maximum. I don't worry so much about chingering a filter, just care about what its goin on, a lot. Black stuff is boot. If you get moisture build up in the exaust pipes, you need a longer ride. The cover, faggaboutit. That's what they do. Chromed plastic,,,,,,,hahahahahahahahah

Do you guys think I should back out the filter a bit and retighten with hand only? Or since it is already overtightened just leave it till next oil change?
What is the downside to too tight?
Thanks, Matt

That black stuff on the pipe is definitely from your boot. I get that on my 6 into 6 pipes from my wife's boots when she rides with me.
Goo gone takes it off no problem.

Leave it alone unless it begins to leak. If it begins to leak then replace it. The downsides to too tight would be a chance of messing up the seal on the filter or make it harder to get off when it comes time to remove it.
