While getting the bike ready for another riding season, noticed the front tire wear bars are showing. It's not bald or anything, but when I checked my records, the tire has almost 18K on it.

A Dunlop E3 is on there now and it has worn well, so maybe I will get another. What say?

Just read some good reviews on a Pirelli Night Dragon. Cool name. Oops, not available in our size.

Are the Avons still a popular choice.? DS on the back, if that matters.

Are they makin' the new Metz 888 in a radial in that size?
They're gettin' real good reviews on the Wing board for grip.
If not, Metz 880 always kept me shiny side up. Grin
(The radial, not the bias-ply!)

IMHO the Avon Cobra can't be beat. Keep 40 PSI in it and it'll last a long time.

That Metzler ME880 can be had for $139 and free shipping on Amazon. Sure would be cheaper
than the Dunlop. Hmmm

Don't like Metz personally I run Avons but if you got 18k from a Dunflop why change? Personally have never gone past 9k on a Dunflop will avoid the at all cost but seemed to work for you.

That price sounds like the Bias-ply.
You really wanna make sure you get the radial, trust me!
If it doesn't say 150/80R/17 it's bias-ply.

(First one's bias, next 2 are radial.)

I just replaced an over 17k Metz 880 bias ply simply because of age, still had plenty of tread. I kept 40 psi in it and with the same tire as a replacement, it's used with a car tire in back. I tried Avon once a while back, at 3500 miles it was cracking in the tread valleys. They just wanted to replace it with a new one, I insisted on a refund and used it to buy the Metz. Had always used Metz but thought a trial of the popular Avon was in order so gave it a shot. Wrong choice for me, went back to Metz and been a Metz rider ever since.

You know it's funny how we as riders have such varied opinions on tires. I have a bias Metzler on front that I have not liked at all. I took it off and replaced it a while back with probably a couple thousand miles still left on it. I put it back on recently because I was taking a trip and my Michelin was almost used up. I can't wait till I get the new Michelin in a couple days. The only other tire I've liked less were the original Dunlops.

I'm running a Bridgestone Battlax BT45 130/90-17 V (rear tire) on front of my Silver Bullet, mounted backwards and balanced with Ride-On.  It handles great double dark with an Austone on back, and is wearing well.  Time will tell, but I'll bet it'll be a 18-20k tire, even on our Colorado chip seal roads.  Lots of beefy tread on that tire.
