Getting sand blasted

Construction season is here which means a lot of trucks on the road.  Dump trucks hauling sand and gravel running down the highways without the covers  pulled over their loads.  Getting stuck behind them is like getting sand blasted.
I realize there is the inevitable stuff flying around but when these trucks have tarps that deploy with little effort it just seems it would make things a lot safer.
Why don't these drivers cover their loads?

. . . . Why don't these drivers cover their loads?

Drove home about 55 miles (mostly Interstate) last Saturday and I worried about my uncovered load of cow manure. Fortunately, the load was really wet and it was raining. I believe I lost almost nothing. Could not have been too bad as I had a car tailgate me for about 10 miles between 66 and 69 MPH (I was not using cruise control).

What a load of crap!

Much like unsecured freight on a flat bed-think straps and chains-most states I'm aware of you as the driver are REQUIRED to have your load covered-aggregate and such like. When I hauled fresh hot asphalt in Colorado we covered it. The only thing I can remember NOT covering was washed river rock. Start with the State Police then County Police then your Local Police. Get enough folks to pitch a bitch and things SHOULD change. Most places make the drivers pay their own fines. Most modern tarping systems are electric over air and operated from the cab. Even the ones that are manually operated aren't difficult and don't take THAT long to deploy. RIDE SAFE.
Today is the tommorow you worried about yesterday. If at first you don't succeed screw it-save it for nite check.  1964  1968 U S Navy. Two cruises off Nam.

That load of crap reminded me of the time I was passing a cattle truck when one of the cows took a piss.  She was lined up with one of the vent holes and kept going and going and going.
I was not on a bike at the time but every time I pass those trucks I don't dawdle.
I checked with the state police a couple of years ago and it seems that's one of those laws that aren't enforced.
