In a perfect world, the press would want to explore all candidates backgrounds (including tax returns) to publish findings in the public's general interest.

In our world, the wing of the democratic party known as the Main Stream Media acts (at no charge) as the attack dog against anyone making a serious run against any democrat (especially any incumbent). Looking under rocks, making crap up, quoting out of context, and generally creating news rather than reporting news.  You will note the general absence of much (main stream) press coverage of the Bitch's past bad acts (of which there are enough to fill books).  Ask her why we can't look at her medical records (cough, cough).

If Trump's returns proved squeaky clean, the MSM would nonetheless bemoan him as being filthy rich.... a well known leftist sin of the first order.

In general I would say it gives a glimpse into a persons character. If for instance a person is rich and says they give x amount of money to charities and then it turns out that they didn't, that gives an idea of what kind of person they are. Or if a person is rich and ends up paying less in taxes than his secretary because of loopholes that also shows a little of their character. You are probably right in that it wouldn't change some peoples votes but for the ones who are undecided it might be important. In general it just appears that they want to hide something about their finances if they don't release them.
