Ouch!  I smile all the time.

That's a good guess, but I don't think it's that.  Ga gets snow once or twice a year.  I just missed the snow storm that tied up Atlanta for days, a couple of years ago.  Got out just as flakes were falling in Macon.

I was leading a group of 7, 2 Valkyries, down the western side of Brasstown Bald cruising along thinking what a great day for riding it was.

Good company.

Good burger at TWO.

No encounters with anyone trying to kill us.

No close LEO encounters.

A HD had guy moved over to less us zoom by.

A couple of other multi wheeled drivers had pulled over to let us zoom by.

No deer encounters.

No dog encounters.

No bird encounters

All in all a pretty uneventful day I was thinking.

I swear as that thought flashed through my brain a BIG mother black bear and cub erupted out of the trees on the left of the 2 lane and lumbered across the road about 20 yards ahead of my front wheel. She was in a hurry as was the large cub slightly behind her.

I was braking and looking for a second cub with goose bumps on my arms.

How cool was that!

I think you could have said "Seen one" instead of "Seen it" and we would have been equally confused. Smiley

I saw a large male wandering around my neighbor hood last week.

Went right out and bought an electric fence to protect my bee hive.

In this context, concerning bears, 100+ yard encounter would be the definition of "cool".
At 20 yards, this would fall into the "Deeply Concerning" (HOLY CRAP! BEARS!) area. Shocked

Also had black bears cross right in front of me on the Skyline Drive/BRP.  Twice, and on the same day.  Each time, I saw them early and slowed to a stop a ways back.  Covered the clutch, though they were more scared of me.  Better to let them cross than have them get excited and hit the bike (and fall in a pile with one).   A big mom thought she was invisible sitting in tall grass, but her top third was showing.  I yelled at her to cross, and she did, indignantly.  Earlier in the day, a mom and two cubs.... the last cub scrambled across and tumbled ass over tin cup down the hill on the other side.

Been way down BRP later during hunting season and had the guys out running dogs after them.  How a hunter keeps up with dogs in deep woods is beyond me.  Just doesn't seem all that sporting to get one treed with your dogs, then walk up and blast him.  Going up the tree with a big knife would be more sporting.   Grin    I wouldn't do it..... but I'd watch.

Black bears, and the odd Grizzley depending on where you are (like my back yard  Smiley), are a not so rare sighting in this neck of the woods. Over the years have had many sightings and close encounters when either riding or especially when out and about fishing. No matter how many times you come across them though, there is always that extra bit of surprise, excitement, and of course fear that you just don't get from deer, moose, and the like. The only thing I'll say about bears crossing your riding path is that they are more predictable in their movement than those other hazards, making it easier to avoid them. They are also a rather majestic animal to see close up in person. Had a very similar close encounter when riding with a group of Valkyries in Idaho 2 years ago at our annual  NW Valhalla ralley when 2 black bears crossed about 20 - 30 meters in front of the lead rider... I was the 2nd bike....sure get's your attention Shocked

Ran into these guys coming home from Spearfish last year... I think it was in Custer State Park (?). I was the lead of 4 bikes, had just turned a tight corner then had to jam on the brakes as there were several cars stopped in the middle of the road with people (kids included) just standing on the road taking pictures!! uglystupid2 uglystupid2 My co-pilot snapped off a few quick pictures ... you can see the one blurry one where the bears started charging towards the road as I navigated around the bozos parked in the middle of the road.

yah, don't get why people get OUT of their vehicles and stop and snap pics of bear or buffalo or moose or the likes.

About 5 years ago ATVing in northern WI I see 2 smaller sized black bears cross in front of me about 20-30 yards ahead so I slow down and a few minutes later I see these 2 teenage kids (if even that old) running across the road after them.  I say those 2 young kids are bear bait if they keep that up.

The only time that I saw bears while riding my motorcycle was in the Smoky Mountains in 1949.  People were getting out of their cars and taking pics.  Dumbness has been around for some time.

Yellowstone a few years back. Came out of the woods when we were parked on the side of the road. I had my back to him sitting on my Valk with it turn off. My riding buddy Chuck was standing in front of my valk talking to me and than he just yells "Bear" and takes off running towards his bike and away from the bear. I look over my shoulder and the grizzly was causally walking straight towards me and was about 30 yards from me. My heart rate increased and I turn the key pushed the start button and the valk doesn't start. Now panic is starting to set in and by the time I figured out that I still had the kickstand down the bear than veered off to the right and headed back into the woods at a very slow pace. It happened so fast I was a little stunned but I was able to snap this picture as he was heading back into the woods with a very shaky hand I might add.  Smiley Chuck stated to me later the reason he ran off was to go get his camera. I don't know if I buy that story, but that is the way he tells it. Grin
