Thieves steal large sign in front of Brushy Mountain .....MORGAN COUNTY, Tenn.  -  Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary is home to one of the most famous escapes in history: James Earl Ray.

For years, the prison dealt with those trying to break out. Today, their problem has shifted to those trying to get in.

"They break in all the time. They just go up across that road over the fence and just come on in," says Lisa Rutherford, the executive director for Morgan County.

In the more than three years spent transforming the former prison into a tourist destination, Rutherford says break-ins are all too common.

"There's nothing really for them to take anymore. What was in there for them to take has been taken," she says.

At least that's what she thought...

"It never entered my mind that someone would take the sign," she says.

The sign located out front of the prison was stolen last month. It's a large sign and Rutherford speculates that the thieves had to work to get it out.

She doesn't know why it was taken or if she'll ever see it again. She just hopes the prison isn't robbed of its legacy.
"Brushy Mountain is such a part of Morgan County history. So many people wanted to see this up and going. So, it's very frustrating when you're trying and they just seem to take it down a little at a time," she says.

Brushy Mountain plans to put up a new sign. But, they say they'll wait to install it until they are able to monitor the area better.

I've heard of the prison before but really learned the history while watching The Barkley Marathons documentary. Beautiful area.

You're correct, that sign now probably resides in some good ol boys garage or barn  Angry

Kinda like stealing the Mona Lisa, sooner or later someone will see it and drop a dime on you.  But until then, it'll be great fun.

I hate thieves, doesn't matter whether they are taking my stuff, your stuff or our stuff.   No problem with defending one's property, life, family or friends through permanent defense means.

Does TN have Castle laws?   I would not suppose those would to apply to anything other than a person's home but, IMHO, it should...........

They ran off with the "Highest Point" sign on the BRP a few years ago,
similar in size, set in stonework. "420" designates a time to smoke
marijuana... they don't even bother replacing the 420 mile marker
sign on the BRP anymore...

There is a street near where we live named STONER RD. The city stopped replacing that one as well  Grin

Pretty sure this one was rednecks and the sign was destroyed they had to use a 4x4 truck to rip it down.

I forget just where it is, maybe a Colorado highway. The '420' mile marker signs kept disappearing, so they started replacing them with '419.9' signs..... cooldude cooldude

I always thought "420" was code for smoking marijuana. The "420" came from the roiling papers brand. Not being a smoker, I could be wrong all these years.
