So many colors to choose from yet so few stand out

Covington, TN

« on: May 19, 2016, 11:02:33 AM »

Took me a few minutes but, I finally got it.

I didn't cheat but, I was very tempted after my first few attempts.

Depending on the order of your operators either 1 or 19.  How would you cheat?

Order of operators, yes, but it seems to add another challenge for the Japanese and that is the left to right process.  For us that's straight forward because we read from left to right.  That's not necessarily so for a majority of the world.

If they were simply trying to demonstrate the the population of our world is less skilled in math today that it was in the past that was a lot of work for something that is already well known.

If the answer is 19 I got it almost instantly. If it is not 19 I will never get it at all.

You have addition, subtraction, and division.  Do division and multiplication first, then add and subtract.

So, 3 divided by  1/3=  9

9-9+1=?

You can do it!

Hint  NOT 19.  If I am wrong, hari kari is an option.

I lucked into the answer, so asking me that question is way off the mark, I was just hoping to get put into the will.  Wink    See the video and go from there.

I thought that without brackets you went through in order presented. There was something about "FOIL" back in the old days. But they are too far removed. It was back before the turn of the century.  Smiley

The correct answer is 1. It COULD be written as 9-(3÷1/3)+1=
but there is no need. PEMDAS handles it fine without parentheses or brackets. "FOIL" was an acronym for solving quadratic equations (a hard and confusing way IMO) meaning First, Outside, Inside, Last.

If the "correct" answer is 1 then you must think the answer of 19 is wrong. THAT is numerical discrimination and numerical discrimination is Wrong. (Get it? It's wrong. 2funny)

Ok, my daughter looked at it for about 5seconds and said the answer is 1....I have to believe she is correct also.

I remember doing the equations with the parentheses and brackets. I must have been sleeping during the PEMDAS explanation. Smiley

could be wither 1 or 9

the division operation is the question at hand....

is it (3/1)/3 = 1

or

3/(1/3) = 9

so then if the operations are then performed

9 - 1 + 1 = 9

or

9 - 9 + 1 = 1

if read literally, then the first should / could apply... it could be interpreted that the 1/3 is meant to be calculated as .33333333333 (etc). then my answer would have to be "1"

the real challenge methinks is not the answer to the equation, but to eloquently explain why there is only 1 answer...

it has to do with what "÷" represents within the equation versus what "/" represents within the equation...i'm not a very good teacher so i'm not going to try.

Probably... but this is not the same as confuse a cat calculations below...

my total is 16.75... and I hand over a 20.00 bill along with a 1.00 bill Two Quarters and three dimes... expecting the change to be correct.

Sir.. you gave me too much...

Just give me a 5.00 dollar bill and a nickel kid...I don't need all the ones, but your drawer probably does.

blank stare....

oh... and its not like the machine in front of him automatically calculates change (and in many cases provides the coinage out of an automated machine)... sigh... but I digress.
