I'm more of a fan of P 38s but, those are some beautiful aircraft and some great images.  cooldude

Just like the cars of the era, most of the planes were gorgeous, too.

The Spitfire is one of the most beautiful fighters built. They sound awesome with those Merlin engines. Another beauty is the Mosquito, with two of those snarling beasts......

Only if you're focused on simplistic and smooth appearance.  I do assume you're limiting your field to propeller driven fighters.  To get the Spitfire near the top you'd have to eliminate the P-51 and P-40. To get the Mosquito up there even as a multi-engine fighter you'd need to bypass the P-38.

It is a smooth looking aircraft and if you limited your selection to the time of its development may have been indeed the most beautiful fighter.   Wink  In its time it was certainly one of the most frightening to be seen by an ME-109 pilot.

I see that the bubble top Spitfire (TE311), probably a late model, also has squared off wing tips.  I have never seen this before.  They must have abandoned the elliptical wings which were the trade mark of the Spit.

I think it was a one off.

This image shows Mk XlV Spitfire MV268 with its wings clipped to help improve low level performance and roll rate.
