I looked at new vehicles last week just for the hey of it. I know the salesman that came out to the lot. I told him I wasn't interested in buying just looking at what was new. Wanna drive it he asked? (New GM) Sure, why not! With all the concern about distracted driving why do they load the dash with all this stuff? The information center will do everything but wash the car. A large screen for you viewing pleasure. There is as much to see in the center of the dash as there is watching TV at home. Distracted driving at its best enhanced by the manufacturer? I can't imagine a young driver being safe in a vehicle like this, but aren't we supposed to be paying attention to "driving"? Maybe I'm over reacting but why do we need all this? The saleman thought it all to be just the nuts. I thought it to be nothing less than distracting. Guess I'm just the old guy.

Agreed but wait till you park or get into a tight spot with one that has the proximity warning system on it. It will drive you nuts to listen to the constant varied beeping.

Why? Because it helps sell the vehicle. Why? Because add ons such as this really add to the profit margin. Why? Because too much isn't enough.

They are in business to make money. If they don't produce something they can and that people want someone else will and they'll lose business or eventually go out of business. It's not them it's us. I say us in the general sense not specifically you and I. For what it's worth I drive a 1998 Mazda pickup with more miles on it than my Valkyrie Standard.

As for all the bells and whistles in a new car, I have to agree to an extent re. distractions. I was riding with one of my grandsons, until I said something to him about it he was actually spending more time messing with the dash novelties than he had eyes on the road. So just for fun, next time I went with him on a 40 mile jaunt I took a small towel and taped it to the dash so everything was covered but the speedo, tach, fuel, etc. It drove him nuts so I told him it was just like learning to fly. You learn the aircraft, then learn to take off...fly....land by reference to speed and rpm only. My instructor figured I was ready to solo when he covered everything one day except for oil pressure.

I felt the same way Chris! They should make a "Dashboard Delete" model. The NAV alone would make me crash.....

I despise all the new "touch screen" dash stuff.
Not only because the "touch" accuracy is totally crap (my cheap ass phone has a better touch screen), but it also removes ALL form of tactile feedback. You are FORCED to look at the screen to use it.
I like my regular radio... I can change channels, volume, seek/scan, etc. by feel alone. I don't have to look at it to operate it.
Same with the A/C, cruise, etc. etc.
The only good thing a screen does in a vehicle is show you video of what you're backing into. THAT actually comes in handy and increases safety instead of reducing it.

I hate the after market that is in my truck (it was there when I bought it used) I tried and tried to figure it out and after three years finally found out how to turn it on. I never turn it off but if for some reason the battery id disconnected I have to find the on button. I wish I had a radio like they had 30 years ago. on, off and am,fm that's all. New cars forget about it, too much stuff I don't want to pay for. I miss my 66 Mustang.

I like all the new gadgets in vehicles. We just bought a new toyota Sienna minivan in january and it has this big screen. Navigation is great. Do I need it? Nope not at all but why not use it of it's available? I have also been looking at new jeep wranglers. Dont see all that fancy stuff in those.

Yep, as said mfgs. are out to make money and the profit margin on the top of the line gizmos are money makers. Why people spend 10-15K more to get those gadgets is beyond me. My so called 'richer' neighbors each bought a near new, but used, Cadillac Escalade 6.2L 'hybrid', the other a 2016 just this week GMC top of the line Denalia 6.6L turbo diesel crew cab msrp 70K got for 60K, and the other neighbor a then new 2015 Mazda CX-5 top of the line touring edition 33K out the door pricing and still a 4 banger no less. He bitched and moan now he needs new tires already at 40K miles being 19" odd ball size and limited production in that size costing him an arm and a leg - I told him when he bought it WHY did he get all that crap on it costing literally near 10K more vs. a stock base model CX-5 and he didn't listen. He wanted the BOSE stereo system and some kind of monitor sensor since apparently he needs all the help he can get since last car he was playing with the gizmos and looked down and smashed into another car while turning. Just wait, in a few years cars will be able to drive themselves. They already have cars that brake for you to avoid a collision since NO ONE pays attention to driving anymore. Thus, is the reason why these damn new vehicles cost 30K on up new nowadays. Was looking at a new 2016 dodge ram crew cab long bed msrp was 47K can get for 39K and still not leather seating, but wife thought it would be nice to get a heated steering wheel and dual heated cloth front bucket seats. Not so sure those 2 options and the fancy gizmoed 8" touchscreen dash is worth an extra 5 grand.

I realize we are in a technological era....I also relate this to fishing. Pretty and flashy lures may not catch fish, but they sure catch fisherman. If its what some people want good on em. I don't think we will get away from it if buying new or even newer used vehicles. But I guess my point being all of this is a distraction when we don't need to be distracted driving a 2200 lb missle. My dad always told me that when driving down a 2 lane highway you are 6-8 ft from death every time you meet an opposing vehicle, so pay attention. I still hear him say that today even though he is gone. Again, maybe I'm just the old guy liking the old way. Maybe that's why I still ride a Valkyrie!

You can't fiddle with the NAV and several other features after the bike is moving, so that cuts the distraction level back somewhat. It has been my experience that distracted drivers don't need tech stuff to be be distracted. most ANYTHING distracts them from what should be their main focus.

L saw a guy with a 63 Nova the other day. I pulled up to him and remarked we both had 6 cylinders. He laughed then started off. He had 3 on the tree. Next light, I told him that was one of the best theft deterrents ever made, now adays. He said that folks have no idea what he's doing. I rented a car with that big screen. I drove 6 hours in silence because I wasn't messing with that stupid friggin thing. I mistakenly touched a button and got 4 colors rotating all mood like on the floor.

yah, I saw that advertised on TV with GM vehicles having now built in wifi on some models. Don't worry, it for sure is a moneymaker for them if people are willing to spend foolishly, they will sell. Is the way of the younger generation. My 2 high school kids would NEVER survive some 30 years ago when I was growing up and am totally serious on that fact.

That's why I like my 2006 BWD (Big White Dodge). It is more like a tractor, than one of these fancy new trucks. That reminds me, When I attended Stude31 and Teryl's wedding a few years ago, I rented a car. I sat in the damn thing for 15 minutes trying to start it. It didn't have a key, but a fob that has to be in, or near, the car for it to start. I had to whup out my phone and google how to start the cursed thing. I had to press the brake pedal, then the START button!!! I had no idea. New Cars > Redneck. Hay Jimmyt

Couldn't agree with you more.
Precisely why I ride an 18 year old bike and my truck is the last year it was available before traction control and all the other crap that just doesn't work or costs a fortune to fix. We took my brother in laws new truck hunting and got stuck so many times, we said screw it and took mine. Tried to climb hills, ditches with deep snow, it kept cutting power because we were spinning and on an angle. Couldn't disable it either.
People depend on their rear view cameras and blind spot monitoring and don't know how to DRIVE anymore.
I was looking at a new Harley last year, I asked if you could get it without Nav, stereo, etc...the salesman laughed at me. I told him I'd be willing to special order it with a blank filler plate in it. He said I'd never be able to sell it in the future because no one would want it. I walked out and bought my Valk.
Old guy rant over.

I love it all!!!!!!! 2016 Challenger Scatpack Many things you can't fiddle with while the car is in motion. I love the bluetooth things. I just press a button on my steering wheel and say "Text Cheryl" and I get a reply "What would you like to text to Cheryl?" "I'm on my way to the supermarket" and it repeats what I said and then tells me it's sent. The reply text is either typed out on the screen or spoken aloud through the audio system. I can also press a button and say "Play Piano Man" and within 4 seconds Billy Joel is singing to me. Once "set up" you can actually do more without taking your eyes off the road than your think. Also, many of the on-screen controls have redundant buttons on the steering wheel and below on the console for climate controls. I'm really enjoying playing with everything and making the car suite my tastes and wants. You can swap out certain apps to appear on the home screen.....for example, in the winter, you can have the seat warmers on the main screen so you don't have to look for it. If you're traveling, you can have the navigation app on the main screen, etc. I can even pull up more gauges like oil temp, oil pressure, cold air intake temp, tranny temp, and more. On another screen I can change the steering feel, turn on or off the traction control (THAT'S A LOT OF FUN), set performance features like Launch Mode where I can set the transmission shifts to happen at certain RPMs for all 8 gears, and sooooooooo much more. I can even locate the car in a parking lot with my cell phone, start it, and warm or cool the car depending on the weather, by the time I get there.
