It was a big decision... and I'm glad I did it!

It all started here, with my 1998 Valkyrie, as it was when I bought it a couple of weeks ago.

The right side saddlebag had a crack in it as the bike appeared to have been dropped at some point, so I decided to re-do the saddlebags with my favourite paint. It's a very light bedliner coating, extremely durable and goes on a lot like Harley krinkle coat paint (according to my Harley friends, anyway.) You can't scratch it, it shines up nice with a wax coating and is super easy to apply and touch up.

It's also dirt cheap. It took five cans to do my bike and saddlebags, for under $75 total.

So I painted the saddlebags.

They turned out great... and so I just kept going.

Did the back end, the side panels, the front fender...

Took off the tank bib to find this:

Wherever you are, Rob and Judy, thanks for this awesome machine. I hope you are both well.

But that lettering had to go...

Along the way there were some frozen (then broken) bolts in the back fender and backrest, rust that needed to be ground away, but all in all it wasn't too bad. And with the bedliner, which seals out moisture, that rust is dead.

The beast, reborn.

Onyxia: The Black Dragon

Not for everyone, but I love it. And I don't think there are many (any?) like it.

Now to await the extra chrome on order for her engine heart...

I wish I caught you before you did the rear fender, I need one in that color(s). Sad

I would have paid for that one and given you the black one, that I need to find someone that can match the OEM paint. Smiley

Ack! Sorry about that, Hook. Never thought to put that option out there. This is a great, helpful forum and I'm so new to it... dang. I should have thought of that.

No worries Mate!  Maybe I'll do the same, then there'll be one on each coast.  Grin

and exhaust, or at least some of the exhaust along with rims/forks.

Nice job well done.

I used herculiner black bedliner on my wooden floor of my new 7x23 enclosed trailer and 2 coats covered very well and looks sharp as well.  Easy to do, but time consuming, ya gotta keep stirring the grit otherwise it settles to the bottom pretty quickly.

Damn, it took me over 2years to find a front fender that color.  I would have bought yours and given you my black one.  Damn.  Looks good though!

Looks good Draeger!  cooldude

I've been considering doing something similar on my sun faded and oxidized Ford Ranger.  I'd probably roll and brush.  Local hardware store has some stuff, $80 something a gallon.  Hoping a gallon would do it.

The rattle cans of this Dominion stuff is great. Just shake like mad and go.

Plus, it literally dries in 10 minutes. It's incredible.

This is my second bike that I've done this way. My Triumph Scrambler has had that paint for two years and it's super durable. Can't even scratch it.

Not my cup of tea either, but you did a nice job, and it cost you less than trying to get the National Cycle bags painted to match the OE two-tone/and pinstripe colors.

These 18" flat cut truck stack tips are a nice improvement over the OE tips. (not too spendy) (prefer chrome exhaust)

As the Valk nickname is the dragon, some have added this small/cheap auto parts stick-on on the side covers (me too) (chrome accent on flat black is decent).  Few different styles.

Absolutely love it. Well done. Takes stones to do something like that but it turned out great.

Kudos.

NO way will a gallon do a whole ford ranger exterior.  It takes 1 gallon of herculiner needing 2 coats just for a 6 1/2 bed truck (and sides on the inside of the bed).  I got my herculiner bedliner at farm and fleet on sale after mail in rebate being about 35-40 bucks per gallon or so.

Good thing about the spray cans though as said takes minutes vs. over 1 day to dry with a gallon roll/brush on container.

Wahoo! Awesome bike! I think the Scram as a city/country explorer and the Valk as the road monster is the perfect combo.

Whaaa? Do you have a link to pics? I would love to see those! I think someone sent me a pic of a bobber from someone on the forum... may have been yours?

I tried looking for pics you posted by visiting your user page but for some reason can't see how to do that in the forum UI.

I dig it...although I do dig the blue and cream... and would have probably paid a pretty penny for some of them... with whatever solid color replacements...

Oh well. Dig the Flat / Matte Black.
