I'm getting ready to install a XM radio on an interstate, any tips? Like where's the best place to put the antenna, would it work in the fairing?

MP

I think it would.  I have just loosely put one in the IS trunk, and it works fine there.  Need to keep it kind of level though.  So, should work in the fairing.  Try to keep away from hard bars, mounts, etc., though, so they do not block the signal.

I've seen em on the trunk lid and the PO of my IS had it there, along with dyna mat inside the trunk lid to give it a ground plane he said.

I have also seen them on the fairing, right at or in the air scoop, and the wire is easiy fed back to the dash area.  If I were considering XM that is where I would put it.....especially since I went Super Valk.  Something to consider....

Hey Jim, how do you hook it up ? Thru the AUX input ?

MarkT

I have found the antenna is touchy; if not mounted horiz and with a clear view of the sky your signal will be intermittant and easily fail.  I put it on a ball mount, off the clutch clamp - couldn't have a better sky view.

Yeah it's suppose to hook up the the aux jack and ran threw the stereo, I'll let you know if it works, I have been looking for one for awhile and I got one for free, if you already have a subscription ( wife's car) then they will send you a stratus 7 radio and kit for free, it's a $79.99 radio just had to pay $7.00 for shipping, then when I get it installed it's a $15.00 charge to get it turned on, not a bad deal. As soon as I get it and turned on I'll let you know how it works, I'm taking a solo trip to Vegas to pick up my wife and thought it would be nice for the weather channel, and tunes.

Not Jim, but I run mine FM modulated.  Get better volume and one less wire.

I'm still using 8tracks.  :2funny: Does FM modulated mean it's tuned to a certain FM frequency and run thru that ?

Oh man the good old 8track days, always had to put a match book on top to get it to play right, man the good old days,

Mine is connected to Aux... Antenna run back and mounted on the trunk lid,  snugged up in the corner where the passenger back rest meets the speaker cover.  Great reception and it's out of the way.... Saves having more clutter up front on the handle bars.

I got one up on you,, I had a 4 track in my 63 2 door catalina 383 tri power set up.
I have XM and I too found the antenna placement critical to the sky. I mounted mine on the handlebars,, but I have a standard

What the heck is a 4-track?  Heard of 8-track parents have one in their huge 3x5' cabinet, but 4-track is what?

I have mine on one of these, right behind and sharing the mount of the GPS/XM receiver

I'm using a knock-off, actually, but its the same thing.

Yes.  You find a FM channel with nothing being broadcast and tell your XM what that channel is.  Traveling for any long distance, you may have to find another clear channel as you may move into an area where a station is broadcasting on your initial one.

I have found that 88.1 thru 88.3 have worked the best if you hook it up
this way.

I won 3 XM receivers and gave two of them away. Probably about 7 years old now and never out of the box. I had thoughts of putting it on the bike but decided against it due to the monthly cost and the the amount of time I'd actually use it .
Cheapest plan is $15.99 / mth with other fees tacked on up here........ what do you pay south, and is it really worth it?

I think it varies. We got 1 year free with a new vehicle and then let it go. They called my wife offering various things to get her to go back. I think she ended up with $7.99 a month. But I think that was limited to 1 year and then it went to $11.99

I listen to the radio sometimes , but the biggest reason I have it is for the weather and traffic and the graphics it gives me. Reroutes me around traffic and storms. I love it for that alone
