My friend Debbie had chemo last year following minor cancer surgery.

The bastard cancer has come roaring back.

Today she has MAJOR cancer surgery and will be on the operating tab le for 3 to 5 hours. Then hospital recovery for 3 to 5 days and then home rest for 4 to 6 weeks.

This to be followed by another bout of chemo.

So if you have a moment just reflect on your life and loved ones.

I'm hoping that they don't open her up, take one look and put her back together straight away after seeing that surgery wouldn't help.

One of the few things I give Obama credit doing the right thing was when he stated that defeating Cancer was a national priority.   I think that is something worthy of going after.   But, nothing seems to have come of that priority.    It was still a good idea.   My prayers are with you and Debbie.   angel

Sure hate that good folks are afflicted with this scourge.  There is hope though, and there is breakthroughs almost daily in the fight to defeat it.  It is very important to support and encourage, and attitude means the difference.  Also don't depend  on Podunk hospitals to do the best for you.  Facilities that have vast experience in these areas you can depend on.  If all else fails, Clinical Trials can make a difference.  I have been on one for 4+ years now, and it may be a pain in  the ass, but it is vastly superior to the alternative.  Prayers and good thoughts going your friends way.

37 minutes after being wheeled out of surgery Debbie was talking to me on the phone. Modern drugs!

Whether she'll remember that who knows.

I'm really happy that so far ..........................................

There were 10 cancerous spots removed, each about an inch in size. Once removed, they used a laser on the tissue at each site to try to kill remaining cancer cells not visible. For the most part, the cancer was isolated in the pelvic area and there was no evidence that it had spread to the bowel, liver, spleen, other major organs, etc.  They saw 6 enlarged lymph nodes and removed those. None of the other lymph nodes were enlarged so there was no reason to take those out.  A bump about the same size (1”) was found on the omentum so that was removed. (The omentum is one of the layers that covers the outside of the stomach and has a lot of serous fluid. Taking it out has some risks/side effects  but leaving it in with cancer there had bigger risks).  Aside from these things, they did not see or feel other smaller dots of growths anywhere. That was something often seem with this type of cancer as it spreads, so the fact that things looked pretty clean for that is really good.

She will be in the hospital until Friday or Saturday and then home. Her healing will be about 6 weeks and after that, they will determine the best route for her chemo.

Phew!

That sounds good. Hopefully they got it all and she's on her path to being cancer-free.  Smiley

Drove down to  Cancer Treatment Center of America in Newnan, GA today.

As I walked through the door it was immediately apparent that these people really f'ing care. Right from the complimentary valet parking to the warmth of the lady at the main reception.

The building is big and so busy. F'in cancer.

Debbie is a "tough old broad" and even though surgery was less than 48 hours ago she looked so well if a bit ditzy due to the 5mg Oxycodone taken this morning.

Whilst I was there for just over 3 hours she was visited by 2 "house" doctors, a respitory therapist, someone to take her order for lunch, 2 different nurses, someone to change the bedding and an acupuncturist. Each and every one of them didn't seem to be in a rush - maybe they were paddling like hell under the water but nothing in anyone's demeanor was allowed to "distress" the patient or make the patient feel they weren't getting 100% attention.

I got a call from her later this afternoon and she tells me that once her sister arrives she will be discharged and going home.

Oh yeah, they have a shuttle bus that runs to and from the airport and other buses that run to all the local hotels.

So fingers crossed that her recovery will continue so well once she's home.

I had my weekly chemo treatment this afternoon.

My surgery, that took me four months to recover from, was 2 years ago this month.

I'm tired of getting stuck with needles.  I'm getting a port very soon.  It's a white, round little disk that sticks to and out of your chest that they use to introduce most any type of transfusion, chemo, etc.

My prayers are with your friend Britman.  I understand what she's going though.

This evening she told me the nerve blockers are starting to wear off. Hooray for Oxycodone.

She's good with drugs. She still has some left from last year.
