My dad was a small business owner. A regular one man operation as the owner/operator of a Culligan Water franchise . Mom did the book work , till they sold the franchise in early 70s. AS best I recall they were pretty busy most of the time .
We ( the kids ) were lucky if we got to have 4 day camping trio in state (FL) . I dont recall them ever attending a little league game when I was playing . I think once they made the trip on a sunday to  Golden Eagles motorcycle club race trac to watch me racing.
My dad parents owned a propane gas bussiness that kept them busy. My moms parents lived in Tampa and both ran multiple paper routes morning and evening ( Tampa Tribune/ Tampa Times)
From about 8or 9 years old I spent most of my free time at my great uncles general repair shop. I was so fortunate to have that experience . I was exposed to welding, machine shop, auto mechanics and more.  I must credit Uncle Pete with instilling my interest in cycles. HE was always hauling around this young un on his 305 Dream from about the time I could climb on and hold the seat strap..
It seems folks were a lot more busy back then . Did the internet make all this free time  we have now?

With 27 kids it looks like they had the solution figured out.
