I just finished my semi annual 12 hours of Continuing Ed, so I can re-up my construction license.  crazy2

Most of it was a waste of time and the rest was rehab of what I did two years ago or what I learned when I took the original test. Angry

I wouldn't mind spending the money and time if they actually taught useful stuff, like code changes.

You know, something that could be used in the field, but no.

3 hours of Sustainability Matters, which is basically all the new "Green" industry BS (actually, not really new, just newly in style)  Most of it was based on the fed's GSA buildings, like I'm ever going to bid a job for them.

1 hr of Positive Business Planning.  Who cares and useless.

1 hr on Collections, basically telling me I can't shoot any one who doesn't pay me.  I knew that, well, I knew it's not legal any ways.  Luckly, I haven't had too.

1 hr on Contracts, nothing new there, basic business school stuff from high school.  If your a builder and you can't write a contract, you should consider another business.

1 hr on Lead Paint, a great history about how lead killed the Romans and the "Little Dutch Boy" was not your friend.  Basically, don't eat paint, don't produce or inhale sanded paint clouds.  Already knew that.

The other 5 hours was all rehab of stuff I learned originally.

I wouldn't mind sending my $$$ to Largo, FL for the pleasure of sitting at my computer for 12 hours, (they time you) if the courses had substance, but, oh well, f it.

They need your tax money (cause that's basically what it is) to be able to fund whatever boondoggle they come up with.

Look at this for screwing money out of people. Hours of training needed in TN.

In order to obtain a beauty license in the state of Tennessee, students must complete the requirements listed below from the Tennessee Division of Regulatory Boards. When getting a Tennessee beauty practitioner certification, you must attend school and complete the state’s required training hours in order to be eligible to take the state's cosmetology board test.

The state of Tennessee does not allow apprenticeship to get your training hours. After finishing your training, you are required to pass a licensing exam issued by the Tennessee Division of Regulatory Boards. Tennessee uses PSI to administer the exam and allows you to take the boards in the English language only.

Keep in mind that even though Tennessee may not require continuing education to renew some licenses, you may wish to consider taking cosmetology continuing education hours in Tennessee annually to stay current on the latest trends.

In order to obtain a beauty license in the state of Tennessee...

In Alberta, beauties only need a licence if they are doing something the rest of us need a licence for, such as driving a car.  It might be wise, however, for them to take a course on how to be a responsible pedestrian; a little bit of camouflage might prevent distracted driving accidents for others.

I need to take 24 hrs every 2 years to keep my NY license

Pay 199 for unlimited CLE each year and frankly its a great bargain
as I can learn things from my computer download course
materials and email questions   Think I took 26 hrs so far this year alone. Its better than watching tv

Sure, I could piss and moan about it but for me its fun learning new stuff even if I never use it and yes some of it goes over my head   Undecided

Gee, thanks for reminding my that I have to update my lead abatement certificate. 8 hrs of classroom at $200 per hour and I don't even do windows. Note to state: If children are eating painted wood, there are bigger problems than the lead in the paint. Just sayin'.   ???

Oss, that's my point (or rant).  They make us do it, but offer nothing really new. To have the same course material every 2 years is a waste of my time and $$$.  I'd pay and spend more time, if I could learn new material.

The state approves 3 party course providers, then fails to mandate new material a requirement.

Most "licenses" are just made so that it is hard to get in to that profession, thus limiting competition.

Take a Barber.  Why 1500 hours?

What harm can they do?  A bad looking haircut.  After a few bad haircuts, the word gets around, and they have no business!  Problem solved. But, Barbers have gone to legislators, and in exchange for voting for them, they get laws passed that say you need 1500 hours BEFORE you can be a barber, thus limiting the competition.

Yeah, I give myself hair cuts every 3-4 months (like an eighth inch all over).  It's going to take a long time to add up to 1500 hours.... like never (before I am deceased).

The front where I can see is pretty good.  The back where I can't see is not so good.   And I don't care.

Nice haircut.   Grin

Thanks, it took me about five minutes.   cooldude

Yes, I have!  You telling me it takes 1500 HOURS to learn that?  Also, I have NOT had one since a while after AIDS started.  I love the feeling of having my hair trimmed, and neck shaved with that straight razor.  Driving truck, I get it cut in a LOT of states.  EVERY barber when asked, said their state outlawed the straight edge because of AIDS, and they no longer give them.

It is also up to the individual barber, so if one was not trained, one would NOT have to give them, even if legal.  So, it is a non-issue.

They didn't just outlaw the straight razor, they won't even use a disposable razor you bring in yourself.

Since my neck fuzz outgrows my head fuzz, I was really disappointed by this..... but rules is rules, and licenses is licenses, and aids is nasty.

I guess all of us that maintain state or federal licenses of some sort have to jump thru their hoops and of course pay for that pleasure. Its all part of the game.

1500 hrs for a barber license !  I'm done in a couple minutes. A #2 guard and zip, zip its done. No wonder that cost $12.

Twenty plus years ago, I got involved in doing financial services work that first required a state insurance license requiring yearly continuing ed.  In order to offer home equity loans in Minnesota, I also had to have a real estate license.  Only Minnesota and one other state had that requirement.  Of course, the real estate license also required continuing ed.  If I would have continued, I would have eventually gone for a federal securities license which would have required even more continuing ed.  Try fitting in the time to maintain two or three licenses...
