It probably looks different because I used fill flash. When you are shooting the shady side of anything, with lots of sun-lit areas in the photo, you need to fill-in with flash. This lit-up the dark areas and created a second set of the star-bursts. I'm guessing those two factors make it look a bit surreal. But I assure you, this is just a photo.

YEP! Look at the shadows T.P. Like I said, I used flash to fill in the shadows. If you'll look in the lower right corner, you'll see a watermark. I'm a part-time professional photographer. Also, no Photoshop. I did spend a little time in Lightroom, but that was for basic adjustments and to remove the dust specs in the sky as a result of my having a dirty sensor.

That's cause you live where bugs are the size of birds. This isn't my home area, either. So few bugs and only 15 miles of paved roads from my son's house. Thus, a clean bike.

Contre-jour, a French expression for a method of photography by which images are captured by using the camera in a position where the light source hits the camera's front directly. The Contre-Jour term comes from a French expression which denotes against daylight. Contre-jour also expresses backlighting. The sun, or another source of light, often appears as being either a brilliant spot or as an intense glare coming from behind the subject.

I just call it backlit with fill, but your description sounds so much better1

Jeff, you're making me so jealous, you ran up to the top of Hurricane Ridge with Redline and the other Vermin before leaving the Valhalla Rally???
And you got a fabulous picture to boot.
I ran for the ferry to Seattle and went up to the Outlet Mall, so the wife could spend money. Should have ran up to the Ridge with the rest of you instead.
Now lets see if you can make it to the 2017 Valhalla Rally also.

I went up to Hurricane Ridge a few days later. I was staying in Port Angeles until the 5th. On the day after the Rally, I ran into several others at the Port Townsend ferry terminal and we rode the waves together to Whidby Island. I was going to the island to visit with my daughter-in-law's grandparents.

Nice shot Jeff, as were the others you posted on the NW regional board (some fantastic shots of the P.A. coast there if anyone's interested). That's what a proper camera gives you...your shots of the coast line, island, etc make my poor old cell phone shots look mundane. Was great that you made it up for the Valhalla...too bad you had to miss the beach party that evening. Enjoyed meeting you, and your family the next day...hope we can hook up again one day

Great Photo! The fill flash worked great .
I'm an amateur photographer and fill flash is much easier now with my Canon 40D and 60D, using a 580 Canon flash.
It still takes an 'eye' for the photo even with decent camera equipment. Your 'Eye' certainly works.

I hate to tell you, but the photos from our ride on June 25 were with my iPhone. Of course, the one on this post isn't. Canon 1D Mark IV, 24-70 f/2.8L lens, 600EX flash.
