New To Me August 2013

North Houston

« on: July 11, 2016, 08:56:24 AM »

I may need to take vacation Labor Day week and was looking for a destination with some milder weather. It will still be hot in Houston.   Eureka Springs Arkansas appears to be bike friendly and is close to lots of great roads.  Do not know if I should camp or motel the trip.  I have friend in Fort Smith that I usually ride with a couple times a year and I love Arkansas back roads especially in the north west part.

Has anyone live near or stayed in Eureka Springs?

It is within one days ride of lots of people and is almost dead center of the US.

I'm just planning and looking for some feedback.

To me Eureka Springs is nothing more than a cheesy tourist trap, but the riding in the area is great. Look into staying at Mt. Magazine, the highest point in Arkansas 2800 ft. Their is a really nice state campground and lodge at the top. It's about 100mi south of Eureka Springs.

Marcus, magazine  mountain is a very good ride. there is a beautiful lodge at the top and the ride around the mountain is not too long. The rangers and the people are all very nice. We left there and traveled to Mena Ark. the same day and stayed at the Ozark Inn for the night. Nice motel and the people were very biker friendly. The next day we rode the Queen Willamena highway it's about a 115 mile loop up though the mountains into Ok. and back. We saw a large bear cross the highway in front of us as we were about 8 miles from the Ark. border on the return leg of the route. There is another Hotel on the Highway at the top of the mountain but it was closed for remodelling when we were there. Have a good time.

It's been a long time since I rode the "Pig Trails" of Arkansas but, the memories of those roads are filled with smiles and great memories.   I highly recommend doing it.   Oh and BTW, I'd hotel it unless you really enjoy camping.   That time of year in AR rain storms creep up frequently.    I say that because I'm not into camping or riding in the rain.   YMMV.   cooldude

Check out "The Hub", a motorcycle spa, meeting center, restaurant, etc. about 60 miles east of Eureka Springs.

I've stayed there several times. Food is good, rooms are clean, prices very reasonable. The place is owned by bikers & is in the middle of the best riding in the area.
