congrats.

I have a mossberg 500 model pump shotgun 6 shot capacity and have used that 6th shot many times to down 2 deer in the past.  Fairly cheap gun to purchase and reliable as well.

Never knew they had an 8 shot capacity but when in doubt, best to go more 'just in case'.    With buckshot up close should be fairly easy to hit your target.

Nice! Welcome to the Free side of the nation!

Now you need to update your profile location, I think admitting publicly that you own a firearm while your profile is listed as The People's Republic of New Jersey can actually get you arrested... Wink

Glad to hear it Dan.   cooldude

Personally, I enjoy the gun store much more than the DMV.   Grin

Nothing wrong with some lighter loads for practice (and easier on the old shoulder).

A sling is not only good for carry, but a quick wrap can take up a nice percentage of recoil off the old shoulder.

Here's a pretty good outfit for add ons:

In the past, I used to do a lot of shooting. Personal 303 British, and Military, FN 308, even on full auto.

Took my friend to the range with his marine Mossberg 500, and magnum shells.

We each tried 3 shots, rapid fire. It was the slowest 3 shots of my life! I didn't want to pull the trigger on the 2nd and 3rd shots.

Make sure you go down to the range also with what you plan on using For Real. Movies aren't real, and there is no way people can handle a gun like that (like from the hip), unless you are someone like ARNOLD!

Try shooting a couple boxes out duck hunting. If you are a 145 lb. teenager you are going to feel it the next day.

Hey there!  Do yourself a favor and get a good set of ear protectors before firing. You will be glad you did. Just try a

couple of shots without it. You will understand.   cooldude

Here is an article about self defense shotgun ammo.  It has some shelf life (not written last week), and opinions I have not read before (buck #1, over OO), but interesting reading.  This entire website has a great deal of shotgun information and worth saving to favorites.

A while back I picked up a Rock Island Armory M5 tactical shotgun.  It's a clone of the High Standard Flite King pump.  All steel metal parts, parkerized finish. Obviously well made, after you get the heavy grease cleaned off - action is smooth - smoother than my Remington 870 - trigger good, good reviews, price competitive at $150.  Made in the Phillipines. Dual action bars, even has a shoulder thing that goes up.  One of the home defense tools.

Disco, the cited article says #1 Buck is the best for home defense, not OO or even O buck. I'm not decided that's right yet, and will do more reading.  I have a PILE of OO buck.  Maybe I'll have a pile of #1 too.   Cool

In home defense (and just outside around the yard), almost anything will do, since distances are short, and dispersion from an 18.5 to 20" bbl will not be significant.

I've even thought that #8 would be better at not blowing up my fridge, stereo, lazy boy, etc.

Re the Mossberg 500, my son and I were out at the range last Thursday, and I threw a few slugs down range with it, for the first time...  Let's just say I was 1" off the Bulls eye, with both shots at 25 yards, and decided I was good with that (felt like what you might expect to feel, after sticking your finger up a Donkey's butt)  Shocked

We killed a buncha paper terrorists that day, and I needed my shoulder to feel good, in order do my part  Wink

Congrats on the 'Bang Stick'  cooldude

You can't go wrong with buckshot, but myself, I use #6 for home defense. In my particular home layout at the close ranges we'd be talking #6 would be devastating to a bad guy but less likely to over penetrate. And, maybe, less damaging to the wall the bad guy happens to be in front of.

Just some food for thought.

Arizona DMV is amazing. And air conditioned.  Its air conditioned.
I've been in there and called before I can get into my book.
Dan, Remember, the second guy hears the "rack-a-round".
If you youtube Alice Cooper's "Zorro's Lament", you'll hear a musical Mossberg.

Not so sure #8 shot will do much good except very close range.  My brother's 'so called' friend shot him from say about 40 yards away with I believe 6 to 8 shot in the back pheasant hunting for a joke and with a couple layers on,  only put small pellet welts in his back just a few little blood spots, but that was at a distance vs. up close.  Needless to say he didn't go hunting with him after that, stupid high school kids.

AS far as kick,  I once shot 5-6 3" slugs thru my mossberg 500 pump one right after the other a few times with my deer hunting jacket on and my shoulder/armpit was sore/bruised the next day, pretty tender to the touch.

One time deer hunting I went thru a box of 20 .30-06 shells in a matter of minutes killing 3 rodent deer from afar.  They started off at a reasonable 300 yards, but injuring 1-2 of them in an open field running away from me unable to cross the fence further away yet was not good.  I guess I should practice from 300+ yards vs. just the normal 100 yard sighting in?   uglystupid2  Problem I have is the gravel pit is only about 125-150 yards long sighting the scope in.   No real ranges that I know of locally able to get over 200 yard practice shots in.   That was when a box of 20 remington rifle shells cost 12 bucks per box vs. 20 or so now.

Thank you all

Sounds like I did good. I think the 20 inch barrel and 2 3-4 shells will work well together. The tube holds 8 shells the stock has internal holders for 4 more. That's 8 plus 4 oo buck. Should be able to handle Those rabbits now giggle

Thanks again, Jess.  I read the article, but was still working on my first cup of coffee.  I was thinking 1 versus double, but typed a single 0 instead.
