Need to check fork oil. If the top fork caps are  removed  are they under spring pressure??

Need to lift the front end off the ground to relieve most of the spring preload. There will still be a little load so when removing go slow with pressure applied at the end to avoid thread damage. Dry fit the caps w/o springs and mark with a sharpie where the thread start to engage. Sharpie will clean off alcohol or WD40.

Don't forget to release the top triple tree bolts first.

If you cover the nuts with electrical tape before you loosen them, you won't mark them up with the wrench.

Good idea is to put a blanket over your tank so if it does pop off and hit the tank it will not scratch it

Britman, the best tool I've found to push down the spring collar is a ΒΌ-inch ratchet wrench (last pic). The
ratchet's square head fits just right into the round hole on the spring collar.
