Commin' outta Somerset (I'm thinkin' 192 & maybe 30 lookin' good) toward Slade, Ky.
'Preciate any info, TIA cooldude

The whole area is awesome.  Nada tunnel.  Slade is my overnight stop on the way to the FCR.  there is a nice state park there and if you feel like a hike, climb up to the natural bridge.

Fill the tank and hit the " let's see where this goes " . Wimp and I took a weekend ride into Kentucky this year we stayed in Hazard and it was one of the better rides we've done cause we was in no hurry with no plans and mainly because we was taking the side rural roads to see " where does this go " .

Neat Place....  was there last year....

Hit it on the way to the Dragon Round up....

Took the lift to the top, but was told you have to walk just as much if you just park in the parking lot and walk up... tourist trap....LOL, but it was a cool ride up and down... If you don't mind heights

It does take some walking to git there.. especially if you want to go under it, but worth the effort.

Mr whiskey I'll be in your neck of the woods on the weekend of the 6th. A group of us Rented a couple of houses-near pigeon forge for the week To do some riding..Then over to Nashville to take in the sights for a few days. A few of us might blow that part off as ( sorry ) were not into country music.

Although I am very biased,  the best rides are in the Pike County, Ky. area.  The Breaks Interstate Park outside of Elkhorn City,  the U.S. 119 route to Harlan and the Cumberland Falls, U.S. 460 to Tazewell, Va.  for the Back of the Dragon on 16, are within a hundred miles of Pikeville, Ky. and are a bikers dream route.  Good roads, great food, lots of beautiful scenery, and most of all---Very friendly folks to meet and greet.  If you want a challenge, ride from Corbin, Ky. thru London,  on to Hazard, to Prestonsburg, and then take U.S. 23 to Eastern Ky for twisty, curvy, challenging two lane backroads, and then go on U.S. 119 to Whitesburg and enjoy Pine Mountain Grill.  Fabulous food !!!
These are within a short ride of Eastern Ky.  And the Mountain Parkway will take you to Red river Gorge for spectacular fall color change in late Sept. or early October.  It is a hard to beat place for great rides.

Wow, thanks Gabby! (I hoped you might see this & holla!) We're really into the "crankin' & bankin" kinda ridin (as opposed to prkwys/hwys). That Pine Mountain Grill looks good, 119 south of Whitesburg looks even better! Do you happen to know if 160 between Cumberland & Appalachia is all paved? Would get us down toward Big Stone Gap & I can two lane all the way from there thru Sneedville, Tn. without a map.
Breaks Interstate Park also looks stunning! Might try & camp them in the fall. I can't stay in the lodge, they have a "Check-out time is promptly 10:00 am" policy & you caint throw me out before noon 2funny

This whole trip is pretty flexible, no particular place to be per say, I'm jus' a "plan your work, work your plan" kinda guy (read, my O.C.D. is showing) so we get a nice room, some good roads, & alittle "touristy" stuff that gets us off the bike to stretch & take some pics.
Right now I've got 192 outta Somerset to London, 30 outta London to Salyersville, 715/77 around Natural Bridge, & 11 toward Beattyville headed back to Somerset for the night. 'Bout 300 miles, we consider that a leisurely day ride. Still workin' out the route home & Pine Mountain Grill jus' got added to that, thanks cooldude

Mr.  Whiskey,

I do not know about the road to Appalachia as I only  travel down U.S. 23 from Pike County  BUT a place down there on the road called Duffield will take you back toward Middlesboro and on into Tenn.  The Pine Mountain Grill  on U.S.  119 is at the entrance to the highest mountain in Ky. aptly called Pine Mountain.  VERY   TWISTY  and in some places  DOWNRIGHT great butt kissesers as you go around curves going downhill and kiss your own butt  SEVERAL  times.  This is a fine road to Harlan, Pineville and on toward Corbin.  You can also take 421 back toward Lexington if you are so inclined.  Very nice pucker up moments.

Good luck and I hope I have helped.  The Breaks on State route 80 is not very large but has lots of quiet places to camp and even has a swimming pool to cool off in this heat.  The road turning right from the Breaks toward Haysi and Honaker in Va. will also satisfy your riding pleasure.  Just suggestions for your riding pleasure.  There is all kinds of roads to get lost in if you want in this 50 mile circle.

Mr.  Whiskey,

I made a very bad mistake on the name of the town in Virginia.  Instead of Duffield,  change that to DUNGANON, Va.  I had the D correct but could not remember the correct name.  I had to look it up on a paper map to make sure that I was right.  Although it is a four lane road,  there is some beautiful scenery along the way.  If you want  another road for an interesting  ride is U.S.  52 toward Bluefield.  It is  ALL two lanes from Huntington thru Williamson, Welch, and Northfork. There is some cute real tight turns both left and right as well as challenging mountains.  Some of them are narrow in places and many small towns to eat and relax for a while if needed.  I am sure that you have mapped out a lot of places, but I find these routes are   F  U  N  to ride  !!!

160 from Cumberland Ky. to Appalachia, Va. is all paved. I live in Cumberland, 160 is as good as Deals Gap, watch out for bears, very seldom do you cross that mountain without seeing bears.

& a little known road along the top of Pine Mtn. (1679) Little Shepherds Trail through Kentenia State Forest (Spoke to Ranger & I now know which sections are paved.)
